Assoc. Dean of Public Services of Sprague Library, Montclair State Univ. – NJ

As part of a collaborative and collegial leadership team with the Dean and Associate Dean for Technical Services, the Associate Dean for Public Services will provide a vision for services and resources to enhance the University’s academic endeavors.  The Associate Dean will also collaborate to provide administrative and operational leadership including strategic planning; assessment; outreach and communications; technology, budgets, and facilities.

Job Description

Statement of Purpose:

As part of a collaborative and collegial leadership team with the Dean and Associate Dean for Technical Services, the Associate Dean for Public Services will provide a vision for services and resources to enhance the University’s academic endeavors.  The Associate Dean will also collaborate to provide administrative and operational leadership including strategic planning; assessment; outreach and communications; technology, budgets, and facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Coordinates the Reference and Research Services Department, including Interlibrary Services.  Oversees Periodical Resources & Services Department, Multimedia Resources & Services Department, and Electronic Resources & Services.
• Collaborates with the Head of Collection Development, Reference Librarians, Head of Multimedia, Head of Periodicals, and Head of Electronic Resources to analyze, develop and assess print and electronic reference and research resources, including databases and monographs.
• Oversees the information literacy program, working with the Online and Outreach Librarian to expand and further develop program to reach students and faculty on and off campus.  Participates in information literacy instruction.
• Coordinates the librarian liaison program, to strengthen the relationship between the librarians and faculty.  Serves as liaison to one or more academic units.
• Oversees Interlibrary Services, working with the unit head to report statistics, analyze trends, and assess operations.
• Works with the Online and Outreach Librarian to develop new delivery approaches and new types of services.
• Hires, trains, evaluates, and mentors full- and part-time librarians and staff in the Public Services Division.
• Oversees department hiring, training, evaluating of student employees in the Public Services Division.
• Works with Dean and Associate Dean and liaison librarians to prepare accreditation and evaluation review information and participate in visits.
• Fosters team-building and participatory leadership in a constantly changing environment.
• Develop, prepare, and manage budgets in concert with the goals and objectives of the Division, the Library, and the University.
• Makes recommendations, implements, and manages new technologies.
• Works with Dean and Associate Dean for Technical Services and collaborates with librarians, professional staff, and classified staff to plan and make recommendations about facilities changes, improvements, and maintenance.
• Serves on campus committees.
• Represents the Dean on and off campus when necessary.
• Makes professional contributions and brings visibility to the Library and the University.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.  Additional Master’s Degree related field or subject discipline; doctorate preferred.

• Five (5) years of relevant administration and management experience, progressing from front line librarian to department or division head in an academic library, preferably in a public service area.
• Ability to work collaboratively with library colleagues, faculty, staff, and students to build teams to set and accomplish strategic goals.
• Knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education and academic libraries including technological developments.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience developing, implementing, and managing budgets.
• Experience developing strategic plans and assessing outcomes.
• Experience working with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and the community.
• Ability to work collaboratively with library colleagues, faculty, staff, and students to build teams to develop, accomplish and assess strategic goals.
• Active professionally in library and related organizations.
