 DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES

THE CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA (Hyde Park, NY)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Library and Information Services is responsible for library operations, strategic planning, budgeting, program design for information literacy and research, technological innovation, and physical and digital offerings. The incumbent is charged with maintaining and growing the collections of the library, as well as developing and executing strategies for positioning the Culinary Institute of America as a major resource center for information centered on the culinary world. 

The Director will be responsible for increasing the global visibility of the Conrad N. Hilton Library at The Culinary Institute of America.  This person will manage a staff of professionals and student workers responsible for delivering research and information services, expanding and managing access to print and digital collections, and overseeing the archives and special collections. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Expand and manage library collections in support of college curricula and maintain up-to-date records necessary for the access and inventory of library holdings.
  • Collect, evaluate and report data regarding library collections in a timely manner.
  • Work with academic leaders in integrating information literacy in and across the curriculum in support of the teaching and learning goals and objectives of the college.
  • Provide guidance and support to CIA faculty in information literacy, student learning outcomes, and library resources to advance their academic goals for students.
  • Execute departmental strategic plans and activities in coordination with broader Institute goals, long-term growth, and the ongoing advancement of library services for current and new academic programs delivered on all campuses and online.
  • Develop annual operating budgets for all expenditures; manage analyses of budget data; and provide critical management information to senior leadership.
  • Drive employee engagement and motivate individuals, develop staff goals and objectives, and evaluate performance, informally on an ongoing basis and formally through evaluations and development plans.
  • Manage current practices as well as emerging technologies for delivering information resources, services and academic instruction.
  • Gather and analyze data for continuous assessment and improvement of library services and facilities.
  • Participate in regional and national library associations.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an accredited college/university.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in postsecondary library administration.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years of experience in postsecondary library administration.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams to respond to business needs.
  • Experience in managing a library within a multi-campus environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and conceptual skills.
  • Solid organization skills.
  • Ability to innovate, experiment and implement new approaches to library science of both a technological and practical nature.
  • Experience in developing and executing strategic plans and goals.
  • Strong leadership and library staff management experience with demonstrated capability in building and managing a high-performance team.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Expertise with budgetary oversight and responsibility.
  • Ability to be flexible and dependable, and to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media platforms such Facebook and Twitter.
  • Proficiency in the knowledge and use of various library interfaces, such as WorldShare Management Services, OCLC resource sharing, e-book platforms, aggregated databases, e-resource management platforms and discovery systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the surrounding community in order to support the teaching and learning goals and objectives of the college.
  • Ability to work with academic leaders in integrating information literacy into and across the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Active involvement in regional and national library associations.
  • Knowledge of current practices as well as emerging technologies for delivering information resources, services and academic instruction.
  • Strong experience assessing information literacy and student learning outcomes.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Able to travel periodically to other CIA locations due to business needs.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as required due to business needs.
