P/T - Info Commons Librarian, Brooklyn Public (NY)

Brooklyn Public Library is looking for a part-time librarian in their Information Commons at the Central Library.


Responsibilities:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.

  • Provide bibliographic instruction, reference, and other information services
  • Orient visitors to the design software and other technology in the Info Commons
  • Assist with preparation and other logistics for Info Commons events
  • Assist with troubleshooting technology problems
  • Assist visitors with reserving public meeting rooms
  • Interpret and implement BPL policy
  • Opportunities to plan and conduct classes and other programs to promote use of the library’s services, facilities, and collections (including online collections and databases)
  • Opportunities to do outreach to community organizations and participate in community events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Some evening and Saturday shifts are required: at least one evening per week, plus at least one Saturday per month

Qualifications:


  • M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school
  • Public librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York
  • Experience working with the public and diverse communities a plus
  • Teaching experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Mac environments, Microsoft Office, digital reference resources including EBSCO and ProQuest products, III’s Sierra, and major social media platforms
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of major design and multimedia applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut Pro X, GarageBand
  • Advanced skills in photography, video production, and/or audio production a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems, and decisively implement appropriate solutions
  • Demonstrated respect and sensitivity for cultural differences
  • Second language skills, especially Spanish, a plus
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work efficiently
  • Ability to work collaboratively and on cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles, practices, and emerging library trends of modern libraries
  • Flexible and adaptable to change
  • Involvement in professional organizations a plus
The hourly rate for this position is $28.15.  The schedule for this position is a maximum of 19 hour/week.

P/T - Ref Librarian I, Garden City Public Lib (NY)

The Garden City Public Library in Garden City, NY is seeking a Part Time Reference Librarian I for its Reference Services.

 
 

PURPOSE: Seeking a dynamic and experienced Librarian I to provide the community with the best possible materials, reference, and information services available. The person in this position will work under the direct supervision of the Reference Department Supervisors.

 

COVERAGE: FLEXIBILTY A MUST

The position requires 12-17 hours per week.  Including Wednesday evenings (4:00-9:00 pm), occasional Saturdays, to be part of the Sunday rotation schedule, and additional day and night hours as needed.

 

Starting Date:  Immediate

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

●Provide assistance to patrons with reference and reader’s advisory services through print and electronic resources.

●Responsible for scheduled coverage at the Reference Desk.

●Assist with collection development.

●Perform other duties as assigned such as covering YA when needed.

Qualifications:

●M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school.

●Prior adult reference services experience in a public library is preferred.

●Excellent computer and organizational skills as related to libraries is required.

●Electronic database and Internet searching experience is required.

●Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (Sierra), our Integrated Library System is a plus.

●Commitment to excellent customer service.

 

Starting: The starting salary is  $29.46.

P/T - Transcription Coordinator, NYBG (NY)

Transcription Coordinator


This is a temporary part-time grant funded position. The Transcription Coordinator will work 21 hours per week and will recruit, train and manage local volunteers and crowdsourced volunteers. The Transcription Coordinator will describe the project and its goals in ways that stimulate the interest of potential volunteers. These volunteers will transcribe the digitized, handwritten papers of John Torrey, a prominent, early American botanist. 

 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with the NYBG volunteer office to recruit local volunteers
  • Work with various social media channels to recruit volunteers
  • Community management of all project volunteers
  • Identify best practice transcription guidelines used on similar project
  • Write detailed transcription guidelines for use on Torrey Papers project
  • Actively engage with volunteers on social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Gather transcription statistics
  • Perform quality assurance on all transcription activities
  • Upload transcribed text into target repositories
  • Report problems experienced with the transcription portal, if any
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Library school degree or some library school coursework are preferred
  • Some familiarity with digital humanities is preferred
  • Experience engaging with others on Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels on behalf of an organization
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work accurately and independently in busy environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in writing a report and one or more blog posts on the transcription component of the project

Overview:

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture located in Harlem, New York, is a research unit of The New York Public Library system.  It is recognized as one of the leading institutions focusing exclusively on African-American, African Diaspora, and African experiences. Begun with the collections of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg more than 85 years ago, the Schomburg has collected, preserved, and provided access to materials documenting black life in America and worldwide.  Today, the Schomburg continues to serve the community not just as a center and a library, but also as a space that encourages lifelong education and exploration.
The Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division seeks a collaborative and enthusiastic Librarian II to assist with reference and instructional services, access and outreach, and innovation and implementation.
Under the direction of the Associate Chief Librarian, specific responsibilities include:

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference service in the field of Black studies in-person, by telephone and email using print and electronic resources.
  • Participate in collection development by helping to select new materials.
  • Create and update content for web pages, LibGuides, and training materials.
  • Develop and teach library instruction classes and orientation tours to groups from a variety of academic institutions, particularly local post-secondary institutions.
  • Promote the collections through blogs, social media and small exhibititons.
  • Maintain a personal program of continuous education and professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
