Librarian/Digital Asset Mgmt Specialist, Ogilvy & Mather (NY)

Ogilvy & Mather New York is looking for an experienced digital librarian to support its asset management services group and maintain its client-specific digital asset management solutions.

The successful candidate will be analytical, organized, and thrive in this organizational/editorial support position. Categorizing materials following client and asset specific keywords, organizing rights-sensitive assets and fulfilling user download requests are core tasks to this job. S/he will also maintain accurate documentation to produce monthly activity reports and respond to user registration requests.


Requirements:  

  • 2+ years of professional experience organizing and cataloguing digital assets
  • Experience in maintaining enterprise-scale asset management systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • In-depth knowledge of media usage rights terminology

Responsibilities:  
  • Work closely with the Clients and Director of Rights Management to ensure all rights sensitive assets are managed   properly
  • Ability to plan for and create building blocks of DAM: access control lists, metadata, volumes, etc. depending on the   platform
  • Accurately catalog assets using client and asset specific keywords
  • Methodical, meticulous, and capable of describing images assets with keywords
  • Experienced with metadata standards, controlled vocabularies and cataloguing techniques

Job Description

The St. John’s University Libraries seeks applications from innovative candidates to act as its Scholarly Communication and Data Curation Librarian.  Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, the Scholarly Communication and Data Curation Librarian will support scholarly communication and data curation endeavors of faculty, researchers, students, staff, and librarians working locally and globally. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting library-led initiatives including the development and management of an institutional repository and development and implementation of an electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) program. The Librarian will provide leadership in the area of data curation on behalf of the Libraries and work with faculty researchers to identify, recruit, ingest and deposit data in the library’s digital repository. The successful candidate will play a significant role in outreach to the research community to deposit data in the digital repository and the creation of training programs, help guides and web resources to support this effort. The Librarian will also be responsible for providing leadership in areas related to digital publishing, copyright, intellectual property, open access, open education and other emerging trends in digital scholarship. The individual will monitor trends and developments in scholarly communication and act as a liaison to national efforts in the area (such as SPARC and HathiTrust). The incumbent will also develop outreach and educational programs that promote scholarly communication in furtherance of both the University and Libraries mission. This tenure track faculty position requires self-motivated and continual learning, professional development, and application of additional expertise in these and related areas.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the implementation, promotion and use of the St. John’s University institutional repository (Digital Commons).
  • Develop policies, programs and practices supporting electronic publishing, the institutional repository, e-portfolios, and electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs).
  • Monitor scholarly communication trends and developments and serve as liaison to national efforts in this area.
  • Provide University faculty, students, staff, researchers and librarians with guidance and resources concerning copyright, fair use, open access (OA) and open educational resources (OER).
  • Provide guidance on appropriate metadata standards and quality to improve discoverability of repository content.
  • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders to raise awareness of and participation in digital initiatives, as well as coordinate training and marketing for such initiatives.
  • Act as the point person for the data curation efforts.
  • Design and implement policies, workflows and technical processes involved in managing the lifecycle of digital datasets.
  • Provide guidance and instruction on discovery, acquisition and use of research data in the public domain.
  • Provide research assistance, reference, and instruction.
  • Serve on University and Library committees.

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Act as liaison to academic departments relevant to subject background and expertise.
  • Supervise staff and students as needed.
  • Provide collection development within subject areas.

Required Qualifications
  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
  • At least four years relevant experience in an academic, research or special library.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or direct experience working with or managing an institutional repository inclusive of an ETD program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or direct experience working with or managing research data.
  • Knowledge of information technologies, standards and best practices prevalent in digital or data curation.
  • Knowledge of metadata formats, including Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and data exchange protocols such as SWORD and OAI-PMH.
  • Knowledge of technologies for data management and curation, and familiarity with preservation principles and practices.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to present and share ideas clearly and effectively to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with others as a team within a diverse and complex organization.
  • Demonstrated time management and project completion skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Second master’s degree is highly desirable and is required for appointment at the Associate Professor level.
  • Experience documenting workflows and procedures.
  • Experience in identifying researcher information needs and in creating effective services to meet those needs.
  • Demonstrated experience in the acquisition and management of born-digital or digitized library, archival, or research materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service.

Public Services Librarian for Tamiment Library and Wagner Labor Archives

The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University seek a dynamic and forward-thinking individual to manage its public services function and to work as part of a team to support research, teaching, and learning in the library. Working in a collaborative environment, this three-year position (with possibility of renewal) is responsible for: overseeing Tamiment’s public services program including reading room operations, on-site and remote reference, and outreach; maintaining and updating website content and overseeing the social media presence; and continuously assessing user research needs and improving the library’s physical and virtual research environment. Librarians are expected to serve as partners in the educational mission of NYU by establishing strong relationships with faculty and students and providing responsive and innovative information services. In addition, the responsibilities include taking the lead in ongoing planning and cross-training for the merger of Tamiment’s and the University Archives reading rooms.

The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University is one of the oldest special collections in the United States devoted to the history of left politics, labor, and social protest movements. Its holdings include oral histories, film, and more than 75,000 monographs, 20,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts, 15,000 periodical titles, an 850,000 item pamphlet and Ephemera collection, and a million photographs. Its collections document the history of labor with an emphasis on the New York area, and the history of radical politics: socialism, communism, anarchism, utopian experiments, the cultural left, the New Left, the post-New Left, the struggle for civil rights and civil liberties as well as the social and cultural contexts in which these movements functioned. It is the repository for the Archives of Irish America, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, and a growing Asian American labor collection.

Under the general supervision of the Head of Tamiment, the successful candidate will: 

  • Provide exceptional instruction and reference services, including developing in-depth knowledge of collections in order to assist researchers (students, faculty, staff and external visiting scholars) in discovering, accessing and effectively using the full range of resources available to meet teaching, learning and research needs, with particular emphasis on Tamiment’s holdings of archives and special collections; work with Tamiment staff, liaison librarians and academic faculty to provide instruction in use of primary sources and Tamiment collections; design, teach and evaluate instruction sessions, including working with faculty to develop curriculum-specific instruction programs as well as coordinating research support for large classroom assignments.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee Tamiment reference and research public services, including management of workflow for email reference, and response to remote reference inquiries directly and in collaboration with Tamiment colleagues; manage the operations of the reading room, provide documentation and training for policies and operations; coordinate the library’s reproduction services and administers policies governing use, reproduction and preservation of materials; coordinate use of library space for classes, programs and events; collect, maintain and analyze reference-related statistics. 
  • Develop responsive and innovative information and outreach services, including management of the department web presence and development of web content; set social media strategy and oversee its implementation; promote and market Tamiment initiatives, collections and services through tours and presentations, physical and online exhibitions, social media, and identify new opportunities and technologies to enhance outreach and instruction.
  • Oversee the printed materials collections, including books, serials, and pamphlets.  Duties will include acquisitions and budget management, coordinating with Knowledge Access and Resource Management staff on the prioritization and flow of materials to be cataloged; supervising the physical processing, shelving, and reading room use of the book collections; collaborating with the Conservation Lab to identify candidates for treatment; and overseeing the flow of materials to and from offsite storage.
  • As a member of the senior staff and in close collaboration with the Head, assist in implementing professional standards and best practices for collections security and preservation and setting priorities for collection processing, cataloging, and digitization; participate in general planning and policy development in the support of Tamiment and University Libraries strategic directions; assist in fundraising and development activities as appropriate; serves on library-wide committees as necessary. 
Qualifications: 
Required:

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, with a subject master’s (in a field which aligns with Tamiment collecting focus); knowledgeable in subjects related to Tamiment’s collecting focus (e.g. organized labor, civil liberties, the radical left) via a combination of formal education and/or experience; 3-5 years’ experience in a special collections or archives department in a research library; 
  • Strong familiarity with scholarly research processes and providing reference in support of scholarly research, and experience providing excellent public services and/or instruction. 
  • Knowledge of trends and current best practices in delivering special collections, archival materials and digital collections to users; experience with relevant technologies for patron request and materials management (Aeon), web editing/content management systems (HTML, CSS, LibGuides) and electronic reference. 
  • Strong public service orientation; a strong commitment to team-based management and successful experience supervising, training, and mentoring other staff members and/or student employees; excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to embrace change.
Preferred:

  • Excellent project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to drive multiple projects simultaneously and keep researcher needs at the front of project planning and execution.

Librarian for Special Collections Transition Coordination

The New York University Division of Libraries is seeking a librarian to assist in the planning and development of a new, integrated special collections facility and the transition to a unified special collections service program. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collections and Research Services, this position will work closely with the Heads of the Tamiment Library, the Fales Library and the University Archivist as well as with the Head of Archival Collections Management (ACM), Digital Library Technology Services (DLTS) and the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Department. 

NYU Libraries is undertaking a renovation to create a single, two-floor space in Bobst Library to house a consolidated Special Collections, entailing the merger of the Tamiment Library, the Fales Library, and the University Archives. The three special collections comprise c. 312,000 books, 43,000 linear feet of archives, 110,000 audio-visual elements and nearly 2 million photographs. The renovation will create a consolidated shelving and processing facility, including compact shelving and a unified service facility including a reading room, exhibition spaces, instructional and event spaces. In preparation for the consolidation, the special collections have undertaken two major processing projects: an archival accessioning and inventory project and a project to complete cataloging of the Fales Library book collection. The three special collections currently occupy separate facilities on two widely separated floors of Bobst, operating distinct service and access programs. Collaboration between them is however extensive, and commitment to a unified facility and service program is strong.

Responsibilities:
 
Working in a collaborative environment, this three-year position will assist the Associate Dean for Collections and Research Services in coordinating a wide range of special collections activities, facilitating the planning and implementation of the renovation and the development of a unified service model for the merged collections, and assisting in coordination of collaborations with ACM, DLTS and the Goldsmith Preservation Department. 

The incumbent serves as special collections and library operations coordinator for the renovation, serving as special collections contact person with the project team including architects and contractors, NYU construction management, library facilities and client representatives, and library leadership. The incumbent coordinates establishing timelines for renovation activities across special collections staff, coordinating the work of curators and archivists, with cataloging and processing projects, and with the preservation staff to identify and communicate dependencies, deadlines, etc. between the two processing projects and renovation needs. The position will also coordinate collection moves in preparation for and during renovation project, coordinating with curators to identify collections to be sent to offsite storage; communicating priorities to leads on the processing and cataloging projects and colleagues in Preservation. The position will also lead an analysis of stacks management needs for combined storage space post-renovation. The position will serve as principal administrative investigator for all special collections grants, managing deadlines, budgets and reports. The position will serve as point person in the special collections’ implementation of the Aeon system. Finally, the position will coordinate the transition to a fully merged special collections public services program, working with curators to determine and document reading room policies, communicating with public services and other stakeholders within and outside the Libraries about impact of merged reading room on public services, and analyzing staffing needs for a combined reading room and public services program.

The position requires: an ALA  master’s degree in library science; five years’ experience in the management of a special collections program; excellent organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills; experience in the development of a unified service program for diverse collections; knowledge of archives and manuscripts management and processing. Librarian for Fales Archival Collections and Reference Services

The New York University Division of Libraries is seeking a librarian to oversee all aspects of archival collection development, management, reference, use, programs, exhibitions, teaching, and loans. This position will work closely with the Head, Fales Library on collection development, including donor cultivation, contract negotiation, collection assessment, and ongoing donor relations. It will also work with the Preservation Department to ensure safety of collections and collaborate with Archival Collections Management Department on the accessioning and processing of archival collections.

The Fales Library serves as the primary special collections repository at NYU in the arts and humanities. It’s strengths include the history of the English and American novel; the Downtown New York art scenes from the early-1970s to the present, including punk rock, performance art, postmodern dance, experimental theater, etc.; food studies; Riot Grrrl; and other developing areas of collecting. Fales supports research and teaching across the university. Fales also has a very strong user base in the world of art from around the world. The collections today include 365,000 printed books, ca. 10,000 linear feet of archival materials, and over 100,000 media elements. In the 2014-15 academic year, 1105 researchers consulted archival materials in Fales, representing 4333 boxes and 12,770 folders that were paged for researchers.

Responsibilities:

Working in a collaborative environment this three-year position (with possibility of renewal) is responsible for developing the archival and manuscript holdings; cultivating donors; negotiating contracts; assessing potential new collections; maintaining ongoing relations with existing donors; establishing and maintaining policies and guidelines for collection care and use; collaborating with the Preservation Department; the digital archivist to determine appropriate technical methods to ensure the preservation of the collections across all appropriate media; and with the Archival Collections Management department about accessioning, processing, and other archival procedures.

The position oversees access to archival and manuscript collections; consults with and provides reference for users of archival and manuscript collections; oversees requests for collection use for publication, exhibition, and duplication; coordinates collection loans for exhibitions to ensure accuracy of documentation, preparation, transfer, and receipt of physical materials; conducts presentations and bibliographic instruction; collaborates with the Head, Fales Library in the development of relevant programming, exhibition activities, and events in the Fales Library. Working with Fales staff, the position supervises students and full time/part time administrative employees; exercises authority or makes effective recommendations for hiring, promotions, salary adjustments, and any other change of status.  Identifies and prioritizes assignments to ensure deadlines are met; reviews work for accuracy. Oversees daily reading room activities; supervises student assistants and interns in the use, care, and handling of materials; oversees collection of use statistics. The position also participates in the planning and implementing of short and long term strategic plans for the archives considering scholarly and technological trends, financial and space resources. Working in concert with Head, Fales Library and Associate Dean for Collections and Research Services determines allocation of grant money and other departmental funding.

Qualifications:

The position requires an ALA  master’s degree in library science or a subject master’s degree relevant to the Fales Library collections, such as English or comparative literature, contemporary art, or area studies such as American studies, performance studies, or gender studies. Four to five years experience in collection development, donor relations, archival processing, and administration including at least two years in an academic or research special collection or archives division, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of archives and manuscripts management and processing, including proficiency with contemporary archival management tools. Knowledge of current trends in digital archives. Candidates should exhibit a strong public service orientation. Preferred: Fluency in Spanish. Proven supervisory skills. Saint Paul's School of Nursing (Queens) is seeking a full-time Learning Resource Center (LRC) librarian. The ability to work a flexible schedule is a must. Day, evening, and weekend hours may be required, depending on the staffing needs of the LRC. The essential duties of the LRC librarian includes: assisting the LRC Lead Manager the day-to-day operations of the LRC; providing information literacy instruction; library reference services; providing individual research and citation consultations; helping with library event planning; maintaining LRC statistics and records; and other duties as required.

·       Ability to plan library events
·       Comfort level with IT hardware
·       Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite

Digital Technician

The Chancellor Robert R Livingston Masonic Library of the Grand Lodge of New York is a special collections library and museum consisting of over 60,000 books, 50,000 artifacts and a substantial trove of archival material. Located in the Grand Lodge of New York, the library attracts researchers from around the world as a premiere destination for research on topics related to Freemasonry.

Summary and Responsibilities:

This is a full time position with benefits.
Digital photography, processing and quality control of cultural heritage collections at the Chancellor Robert R Livingston Masonic Library of the Grand Lodge of New York will be the focus of this position. Major responsibilities include administration of born-digital records, digitization for eventual ebook distribution, maintenance of digital historical records, and the digitization of fragile special collections material. The successful candidate will also perform library duties such as shelving and coverage of the Reading Room as needed and will work with the library’s small staff in a collaborative fashion.

Qualifications:

-Recent graduate of MLIS program or student in MLIS program with a concentration in       Archives, Records Management or Digital Collections.
- Technical proficiency with SLR digital cameras.
-Experience with digital assets or electronic records, databases, information architecture and/or digital archive workflows.
- Understanding of photographic technical terminology and techniques. Experience working with  Adobe Photoshop or other image manipulation software.
-Experience with digitization tools such as the ATIZ bookscanner preferred.
-Strong analytical and problem solving ability.
-Strong organizational, planning, time management and project management skills.
-Strong service orientation, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Physical requirements include: Ability to lift forty pounds to the waist.

Description of the Position:

Oversees, monitors and administers functional and technical components of library-based production software.



Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for oversight of several key information management and discovery systems including ALEPH500,  DigiTool, Primo and Archivist Toolkit. Responsible for ensuring optimal performance which includes: usage, statistics, reports, batch jobs, migration of software versions and learning about new features available. Ability to test and troubleshoot problems related to the systems and to further develop and enhance services.  Responsible for system upgrades and migrations. Responsible for creating programs to export data from the database.

Minimum Requirements:
ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or equivalent experience in information technology. Experience with ExLibris products. Knowledge of library cataloging standards (RDA, LCSH, MARC21, DACS, METS). Knowledge of Oracle, VI, XML/XSL, CSS, JavaScript or JQuery, Oxygen, MySQL and writing queries in SQL and other programs.  Demonstrated ability to work independently on projects and in collaborative team environment. Demonstrated analytical, technical and troubleshooting skills for complex applications as well as excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to train staff on implementation of new features in the systems.
