Librarian I (Adult Services) position

The New Rochelle Public Library has an opening for a Librarian I in its Adult Department.  This is a civil service position requiring applicants to apply through the City of New Rochelle Civil Service Department.  The application period closes on May 22, 2024 at 4:00 PM.  We Graduating MLIS students are welcome to apply.


Information about the New Rochelle Public Library School District: The Library (www.nrpl.org) is a school district library serving the City of New Rochelle with a population of nearly 83,000 and an annual budget of $6.6 million.


General Statement of Duties:
Performs professional library duties under direct supervision. Must be proficient in technologies in order to promote library collections, resources and services. Employees in this class are assigned work progressively more difficult as their experience in the field broadens. This position requires weekend and evening shifts. Bilingual English/Spanish fluency is a plus.


Examples of Work:

● Reference desk responsibilities – assists patrons in locating library materials; answers library technology related questions; room(s)scheduling ; responds to queries relating to library programs and service. Telephone and email reference. Basic readers advisory.
● Collection development and management of assigned collection -manage budget, ordering, promoting and weeding titles within the collection.
● Uses technology to promote library collections and resources - familiarity with social media, Google suite and Microsoft applications.
● Professional development : maintains currency in library trends through attendance at webinars, seminars, workshops and professional development courses.
● Develops and teaches computer classes for the public. Develops study materials for technology and subject specific classes.
● Liaises with other library departments and community partners to meet the needs of New Rochelle residents.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:

Understanding of trends, issues and initiatives in the field of Public Librarianship; knowledge of library collections, both physical and electronic; knowledge of computer technology to support and enhance library operations: ability to function as a team member in the planning and implementation of library projects; tactful and effective communication skills with individuals and groups of diverse age and backgrounds; ability to think critically and understand the needs of the community; ability to work independently and collaboratively; Self motivated and
organized with the ability to multitask. Punctuality and reliability a must.


Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association; possession of New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate. You must also be a New York State resident.


Compensation:
This is a Civil Service appointment represented by CSEA. Minimum salary upon appointment will be $60,175 - $72,427 (Step 1). Work week is 36 hours (September - June)/33 hours (July-August). Standard benefits package applies including medical, dental and NYS Retirement System pension plan. Standard leave package applies.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collection Strategy and Management, the Content Management Lead provides leadership, guidance, training, and workflow management in a collaborative and diverse working environment.  The Content Management Lead will be expected to participate in faculty activities such as research and scholarship, faculty governance, and professional activities consistent with University standards for promotion and tenure.

  • Oversee and provide leadership for various platforms' cataloging, metadata management, and strategic initiatives.

    Overview
    Special Collections Processing (SCP) is responsible for promoting discovery of NYPL special collections materials through the creation and publication of catalog records and collection guides and preparing material for storage and use. Special collections include analog and digital archives, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, designs, maps, and non-commercial sound and moving image recordings.  The unit also supports the acquisitions of special collections by making site visits to assist the curator in evaluating collections, and estimating time and costs associated with receiving and processing the material.

    The role of the Audio and Moving Image Description unit of Special Collection Processing is to create initial item-level inventory description of audio and moving image (AMI) materials, process and arrange AMI based on format, content, and historical background, and create public description of AMI materials in catalog records and collection guides.

    The Specialist position is responsible for inventory description and original and complex copy cataloging of materials in all audio and moving image formats, including born digital, for special collections held by the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

    Responsibilities
    Reporting to the Manager of Audio and Moving Image Description, the Specialist II will:

    • Create inventory records for physical and born-digital audio and moving image materials.
    • Conduct research and use audio and moving image format knowledge to make decisions regarding duplicates and multi-volume recordings.
    • Perform original and complex copy cataloging of audio and moving image materials in the English language, creating MARC21 records to full level cataloging standards.
    • Adhere to RDA guidelines and the Library of Congress standards and other national cataloging guidelines for audiovisual cataloging, such as AMIM, ARSC, DACS, and ISBD.
    • Search for and apply name, subject, and uniform title authority headings and form and genre terms in bibliographic records.
    • Provide input on internal procedural documentation and best practices.

    Science & Technology Librarian

     

    Position Summary      

    Under the direction of the Head of Reference & Information Services, the Science and Technology Librarian provides targeted library support to University students, faculty, and staff in the specific liaison areas of science, technology, data management, and other disciplines as needed.

    Additional responsibilities include: in-person and online delivery of undergraduate and graduate level library instruction; provision of research consultations to basic as well as advanced researchers; evaluation of discipline specific resources to be added or removed from the library collections; creation and maintenance of research guides utilizing the Libraries’ web-based content management systems; design and delivery of topical, technical, and methodological workshops pertinent to the STEM community of Fordham University.

    As a member of the Fordham Libraries Reference team, this librarian must efficiently and accurately respond to telephone, chat, text, email, and service desk inquiries as scheduled, and contribute to the training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate student workers.

    Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.

    Essential Functions    

    · Provides STEM faculty and students with targeted research support for STEM sources and databases, particularly those that require fluency with STEM concepts, research methods, and practices.

    · Prepares for and delivers: course specific library instruction sessions, one-on-one research consultations, information management workshops, and presentations to academic departments. This may require testing sample search techniques and methods, learning or recommending new library resources, and creating event-specific instructional handouts, slides, videos, or guides.     · Monitors and compares the collections and policies of consortia and metropolitan New York libraries to appropriately refer researchers as needed to external library collections.

    · Reviews professional literature to identify new trends, techniques, issues, and applications; selects, requests, and completes professional development activities to enhance skills.

    · Utilizes assessment applications to collect and share feedback on reference activities. Writes and submits a personal quarterly report which includes progress on projects, statistics of reference activity, and reflections on personal contributions to the Library and University mission and goals.

    · Creates and updates training documentation for student employees; trains, supervises, and mentors student employees.

    General Description

    CUNY’s Office of Library Services (OLS) seeks an energetic and enthusiastic individual to serve as the CUNY Outreach & Processing Archivist (OA). This Mellon-funded position, reporting to the University Archivist (UA), will work on a large-scale grant project to preserve and share the rich history of CUNY now and into the future by establishing a CUNY Central archive as well as a connected, discoverable network of archives and special collections across CUNY’s libraries and research centers and institutes.  

    The OA will work primarily with colleagues at the CUNY campuses to identify and make discoverable materials documenting CUNY’s history and related materials documenting the populations we serve and develop the social infrastructure for a robust and fluid network of campus archives that serve campus and university needs. This includes assisting in the planned CUNY-wide adoption of ArchivesSpace. The OA will work in partnership with the University Archivist to conduct a CUNY-wide archives survey, identifying needs on each campus and selecting high priority collections for processing and fast-track use by researchers. The OA will partner with campus archivists, faculty librarians, and classroom faculty (including faculty fellows) to promote the use of CUNY archives source materials in the classroom and develop programming to engage the CUNY community and the public with CUNY-based archival material and special collections. 

    In partnership with the UA and the project’s Advisory Board, the OA will contribute to a program for outreach to campus communities and beyond. The OA will coordinate and supervise the work of a corps of part-time project archivists, drawn from the GSLIS (Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Queens College) archives certificate program, and will assist the UA in the selection and coordination of Faculty Archives Fellows. 

    Important attributes will include the ability to plan, organize, and set and achieve goals. Having the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate will be essential to success, as the candidate will be working within and across library departments and divisions. 

    Please note that this position is a grant-funded position that starts from May 2024 and ends December 2026.

    Other Duties

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of a strategy to survey and inventory appropriate collections at campus archives as well as CUNY centers and research institutes, in collaboration with local staff  
    • Guide and coordinate GSLIS part time workers in inventorying and processing across campuses, centers, and institutes 
    • Work with faculty fellows and others to publicize and use collections  
    • Coordinate the processing of and access to collections used by faculty fellows, ensuring classroom adoption of archival material. 
    • Work with campus archivists and the University Archivist to identify Central Office records and institutional collections to prioritize.  
    • Contribute to the development of a plan for prioritizing processing of collections

    Qualifications

     Requirements 

    • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library, archival, or information science with successful completion of graduate coursework in archives  
    • Experience in archival appraisal and processing

    Part-Time Knowledge and Learning Services Assistant

    Darien Library seeks a friendly, energetic self-starter and life-long learner with excellent information-seeking and technology skills. The successful candidate will provide extraordinary customer service, research help, and tech support to Library users. The ideal candidate finds joy in helping others, is perpetually eager to learn new things, and is excited to work with people from all walks of life.

     

    Main Duties & Responsibilities

    • Staff an active Reference Desk and Technology Help Desk.
    • Oversee activity in the adult Research, Magazine, and quiet study areas.
    • Utilize appropriate reference resources to connect patrons to the information they seek.
    • Assist patrons with print and digital resources.
    • Maintain a current knowledge of the Library’s electronic resources including databases and links from the Research page.
    • Assist patrons with computer hardware and software, including printers and scanners.
    • Provide Notary Public Services.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications

    • MLIS degree or a degree in progress at an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program.
    • Excellent customer service and reference skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
    • Clear and direct oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to type quickly and accurately.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
    • Multilingual candidates, or those with a functional knowledge of another language, are desirable.

     

    Schedule

    This is a part-time position with no benefits. The candidate will work at least 12-16 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, and additional shifts as needed, not to exceed 29 hours per week.

     

    Salary & Benefits

    $20-$29.50 an hour, commensurate with experience and CLA minimum requirements.

    The Hostos Community College Library is seeking an innovative, collaborative and growth professional to join its team. This position is responsible for coordinating the Hostos Community College Library online presence and providing expertise for the migration, integration, and design of user-facing library systems and applications that support academic research. We are especially interested in a candidate who, through experience and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and advancement of the College community. The Web/Digital services librarian is a technologically proficient and experienced, collegial professional who works with the Reference, Archives and Special Collections, Technical Services, and Access Services to ensure best practices, accessibility needs, and standards and reports to the Chief Librarian.

    In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

    • Develops, designs, and continuously improves the library website’s architecture and integration of web-based services into student success initiatives.
    • Ensures that library content is delivered and accessible across multiple formats to support the research needs of students, faculty, and staff at Hostos and CUNY.
    • Coordinates and maintains content for web and mobile-enabled interactive services that provide a quality user experience.
    • Collaborates with other library faculty and staff to improve the accessibility, usability, responsiveness, and overall user experience of the library’s web-based services.
    • Performs systems needs assessment and analysis for library patrons.
    • Develops procedures and maintains documentation for website maintenance.
    • Supports students' development of research skills at the reference desk and through information literacy instruction.
    • Guides faculty and staff in the effective use of library services and resources.
    • Demonstrates record of success working within or providing services for diverse groups.
    • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
    • Provides collection development and liaison duties by collaborating with department representatives and faculty members in assigned college or department.
    • Develops and maintains research guides for subject areas to be determined.
    • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of library services, policies, and procedures.
    • Participates in library, college, and university committees.
    • Other related duties as assigned.
    • Essential duties require on-campus presence.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Master’s in Library Science (MLS), Master’s in Library Information studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Second master’s in non-library subject area (for assistant professor title).

    Preferred qualifications include:

    • Familiarity with content management systems including Springhare CMS and/or Pressbooks.
    • Experience in website design, application of web accessibility standards, content management system support, XHTML, HTML, CSS, and text and image editing software.
    • Current knowledge of web and digital content technologies and standards of interoperability, usability, and accessibility for the web.
    • Experience with designing and/or running user experience testing
    • Ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience, work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member, and establish cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
    • Familiarity with learning management systems to build library content in Brightspace D2L.
    • Familiarity with higher education and especially with the needs of first-generation students.
    • 2 – 5 years’ experience with a portfolio of projects.
    • Availability to work weekend and evening hours.

    COMPENSATION

    Instructor: $72,177 - $79,566

    Assistant Professor: $72,667 - $82,928
