Position Summary/Overview: 

Conducts high-level research and provides reference services for attorneys and clients.  The Research Services Librarian is responsible for educating the legal and administrative staff in the use of research sources.   This position will contribute to collection development by identifying and evaluating resources. Supports the Firm’s knowledge management activities, innovation initiatives and special projects.
 
Essential Job Requirements:

•              Provides timely, accurate and cost effective high level research and analysis to attorneys, paralegals, clients and staff.
•              Analyzes, summarizes, and customizes results in order to meet the specific requirements of the requestor.
•              Provides training and one-on-one sessions on research services and electronic resources to legal and non-legal staff as needed.
•              Supports news, docket tracking and alerting activities of attorneys.
•              Develops strong working relationships with outside libraries, vendors and associations to ensure prompt and cost effective service.
•              Proactively selects, evaluates and recommends new print material and online databases to support the firm’s growing practice areas. 
•              Contributes to the knowledge initiatives of the firm, including the creation of practice area pages and research guides.
•              Participates in continuing legal education activities and further professional development in the research and knowledge management field.
•              Tracks research and reference time for client billing purposes.
•              Participates in projects and related duties as required.
 
 
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

•              M.L.S. with 2-3 years relevant legal research experience.
•              Demonstrated knowledge of legal and non-legal research resources in all formats.
•              Expert in searching online research databases and in the use of spreadsheets, word processing and web publishing tools to aid in the appropriate packaging of information to meet specific research and knowledge needs.
•              Knowledge of SharePoint 2010 a plus.
•              Ability to manage multiple tasks in a team orientated, collaborative, fast-paced environment.
•              Works well under pressure, meets tight deadlines, shows attention to detail, committed to customer service.
•              Excellent interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills in order to work with a diverse group of legal and non-legal professionals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Receives new periodical and newspaper issues (online and print), checks them into the ILS (integrated library system) and prepares and sends for routing.
Orders, materials, receives new items and checks them into the ILS
Orders, labels and distributes deskbooks
Deals with vendors to resolve missing issues, subscription, and billing problems
Creates and maintains distribution lists for routing purposes, electronically and print
Creates catalog records for new periodicals
Maintains periodicals database in the firm’s document management system
Maintains news server watches, adds and deletes users
Monitors and posts stories about the firm to the intranet homepage
Assists with filing pocket parts
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Experience with legal materials and using an automated technical services system.  Experience with SirsiDynix Horizon a plus
Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, Acrobat
Excellent interpersonal, communication and writing skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a highly pressured environment

Digital Archivist, NY Historical Soc (NY)

Job Title: Digital Archivist
Department: Library
Reports to: Head of Archival Processing
3- Year, grant-funded. Position begins July 1, 2019.
The New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the country’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.
Job Summary: 
The New-York Historical Society seeks to hire a Digital Archivist for a three-year project funded by the Leon Levy Foundation to develop a repository of born-digital archival materials. The position is responsible for developing a sustainable infrastructure for collecting, processing, preserving, and making born-digital materials accessible to staff and researchers; deploying that infrastructure to bring historically important born-digital institutional records into the N-YHS Institutional Archive; and preserving, processing, and making accessible other born-digital materials currently in the library’s archival collections as well as newly acquired born-digital materials. The project starts on July 1, 2019.
Essential Job Duties:
  • Survey the current digital landscape at N-YHS, including digitized collections, born-digital files on current and legacy media, and other born-digital materials

  • Assess, select and test software tools to identify those that best fit N-YHS’s digital preservation objectives

  • Develop and document policies, workflows and procedures for accessioning, processing, describing, preserving, and providing access to born-digital materials

  • Identify opportunities for integration with, and enhancements in the use of, N-YHS’s existing platforms, including ArchivesSpace and Islandora

  • Apply, and refine as needed, the emerging process to born-digital material acquired from N-YHS’s internal records, legacy media in existing hybrid collections, and newly-donated accessions

  • Establish standards for integrating born-digital material into N-YHS’s finding aids and catalog records

  • Collaborate with the IT Department and various Library professionals in the development and implementation of all aspects of the digital infrastructure

  • Provide guidance to curators to incorporate considerations related to born-digital material into collecting policies and acquisition decisions

  • Train existing staff on the born-digital procedures developed during the project and assist in their execution of the new procedures

  • Keep current with trends and developments in the field of digital preservation
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in library and information science with a concentration in archives, a Master’s degree in Archives Management, or equivalent

  • Minimum of five years of  experience as a professional archivist accessioning, arranging and describing archival materials, including a minimum of three years processing born-digital material

  • Experience developing strategies and procedures for handling digital formats, including text, image, email, and others

  • Knowledge of theory, standards, and best practices in digital preservation, such as the OAIS model and trusted digital repository concepts

  • Knowledge of current trends and technologies for archiving digital materials, especially ingest, forensic and processing tools such as Bitcurator

  • Knowledge of descriptive standards, such as DACS, MARC, and DCRM(MSS)

  • Experience with EAD, MODS, Dublin Core and other XML-based standards

  • Knowledge of metadata standards for describing born-digital materials

  • Experience using command line interfaces and the ability to write and use  simple scripts in Python or other such languages

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical skills in the context of digital preservation
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with project management

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff at all levels of the organization
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with the ArchivesSpace staff interface and using the system’s API

  • Experience with open source digital asset management systems such as Islandora

  • Familiarity with copyright, access, and privacy issues relating to born-digital content

  • Experience with website preservation tools such as Archive-It

  • Continuing education coursework or certification in digital preservation

The Ursula C. Schwerin Library, New York City College of Technology, CUNY, seeks a tenure-track library faculty member at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank to serve as Instruction and Reference Librarian. The successful candidate will work with colleagues to develop and offer information literacy and library instruction, including collaborative efforts with faculty in all disciplines. The Instruction and Reference Librarian will also offer reference service and be responsible for designated areas of collection development. All members of the library faculty must maintain a record of excellence in librarianship, scholarly achievement, and service. The Ursula C. The Instruction and Reference Librarian will:

-          Offer instruction to students and faculty in information literacy, including library services/research resources and discipline-specific presentations for programs, courses, or assignments. -          Provide comprehensive reference consultation to members of the college community in person and online. Develop and maintain knowledge of resources in general reference areas and degree fields.

-          Work as subject specialist in assigned areas to evaluate, select, and deselect library materials. Responsibilities include website content creation in areas of specialization and consultation with subject faculty regarding resources and services, including information literacy and instruction.

-          Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution
- A second master’s degree OR doctorate is also required for appointment as Assistant Professor; if appointed as Instructor, the candidate will be expected to complete an additional graduate degree within 5 years (CUNY tuition remission is available)
- Experience providing instruction or reference within a diverse community
- An interest in scholarship or creative achievement appropriate for a tenure-track position
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership qualities, a commitment to collaboration and mutual respect, and the ability to work efficiently and effectively on shared projects and committees in our multicultural library and college/university community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in an academic or research library
- Background, experience, or degree in STEM fields, especially health sciences or engineering technologies
- Knowledge of best practices in educational technologies and instructional design
- Familiarity with current trends in scholarly communication, including open access publishing and open educational resources
- Familiarity with assessment practices in libraries and higher education
