FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The College's Chief Librarian takes a lead role in the integration of the library with teaching, learning,and research activities at the campus. The Chief Librarian understands and has a passion for higher education and the library's role in same; can articulate a clear vision for a 21st century library; is a mentor, developer, and motivator of staff; can effectively arbitrate disputes and manage change; and has excellent speaking and listening skills. Above all, the Chief Librarian is an enabler of student learning and academic achievement. The Chief Librarian will:
- Support the College library through providing in-depth consultation with students and faculty and collaboration for the ongoing improvement of instructional programs and practices.
- Pursue an active scholarly agenda, perform supervisory duties, and participate in college-and university-wide programs and committees as assigned.
- Establish and implement policies for the College's library.
- Balance print and digital library services and oversee digital information services for the campus,including the library's role in campus web-based information technologies and applications.
- Work with the CUNY's Council of Chief Librarians and other senior academic administrators to identify appropriate electronic journals and full text-e-resources for University-wide licensing.
- Collaborate closely with the College's teaching faculty, Academic Computing, Information Services, and New Media Production groups.
- Prepare and justify budgets. - Negotiate effectively with vendors.
- Seek grants to enhance library system funding, resources, programs and services, and participate in other College fundraising activities.
- Prepare statistical analyses of library functions and areas.
- Continually assess the performance of library functions and areas, and make timely changes to improve patron services.
- Identify and enhance access to information resources with other NYC educational and cultural organizations.
- Represent the Library on college-wide and university committees.
- Represent the College in local, regional and national academic library initiatives.
- Serve as the principal advocate for the library at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS
All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or equivalent as noted below closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Ph.D. degree in Library Science or equivalent preferred
- For appointment as Associate, or Full Professor, a second graduate degree is required.
- Strong leadership experience in academic libraries
- Proven administrative record, excellent communication skills, collaborative ability, thorough knowledge of the library applications of new technologies, and an understanding of the current issues facing academic institutions and academic libraries in particular
- Fundraising experience, negotiating skills, program planning ability, experience as an advocate at the local, state, and national level, consensus-building ability, and acquaintance with the University's integrated online library system (EX Libris-Aleph 500) would be highly desirable
- The ability to work with others for the good of the institution.
