Darien Library seeks a friendly, energetic, self-starter and life-long learner with excellent information-seeking and technology skills to support the Knowledge and Learning Services department on a temporary basis from June 15th through August 31st. This role is designed to provide flexible coverage for scheduling gaps based on the operational needs of the department. This temporary role does not guarantee a minimum number of hours per week, and the coverage days may vary.

The successful candidate will provide extraordinary customer service, research help, and tech support to Library users. The ideal candidate finds joy in helping others, is perpetually eager to learn new things, and is excited to work with people from all walks of life.

This role is best suited for candidates seeking flexible, supplemental hours rather than a consistent weekly schedule.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional service to patrons who visit our active Reference Desk and Technology Help Desk.
  • Provide traditional and virtual reference assistance.
  • Oversee activity on the Second Floor and Mezzanine.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the Library's electronic resources including databases and links from the Research page, as well as resources provided by the State Library and other freely available resources.
  • Utilize appropriate reference resources to connect patrons to the information they seek.
  • Assist patrons with print and digital resources, including via Libby, Hoopla, and ComicsPlus.
  • Assist patrons with computer hardware and software, including printers and scanners.
  • Provide Notary Public Services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • MLIS degree or a degree in progress at an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program.
  • Excellent customer service and reference skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
  • Ability to self-start, multitask, and manage time effectively.
  • Clear and direct oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to type quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Multilingual candidates, or those with a functional knowledge of another language, are desirable.

 

Schedule

  • Temporary position: June 15, 2026 through August 31, 2026
  • As-needed scheduling with no guaranteed weekly hours. Hours may not exceed 29 hours per week.
  • Shifts are typically four (4) hours and are limited to evenings and weekends.
  • This position is not eligible for benefits.

 

Salary 

$22-$29.50 an hour, commensurate with experience and CLA minimum requirements.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Digital Services, the Digital Preservation Manager leads the development and implementation of the digital preservation program, ensuring the long-term access and preservation of digital content (both born-digital and digitized content) under SBU Libraries' stewardship. This position co-leads the ongoing management of the library's digital preservation repository, Preservica, with the Head of Preservation.

This role is critical to ensuring the lifecycle of the Libraries’ digital content for preservation and ongoing access. The role requires a team player who can provide expertise and guidance to managers in other library units on implementing and using digital preservation methodologies, tools, workflow accessibility, and sustainability best practices, including designing and implementing ingest, fixity, and validation workflows for different content types and file formats. 

The incumbent will act as an expert user of our digital preservation system, integrate digital preservation applications (open source or proprietary), consult with infrastructure administrators and software developers, and provide digital preservation services to stakeholders in the libraries/archives as needed.

Responsibilities Include

  • Leads and manages the development, implementation, and documentation of digital preservation strategies, policies, guidelines, and projects that support preserving long-term access to the Libraries’ digital content.

  • Acts as an ethical steward by demonstrating integrity, respect, and accountability toward stakeholder communities; respects digital content’s intellectual property, privacy, and security requirements; and brings a proactive awareness of historical institutional biases.

  • Assesses and implements best practices and guidelines from the Digital Preservation community, such as the NDSA’s foundational strategy and four levels of digital preservation, while supporting the Libraries’ strategic directions, including environmental impact.

  • Provides technical guidance to in-house and outsourced digitization centers to maintain correct metadata and file formats.

  • Ensure effective system integration among preservation platforms, open-source applications, and other library and campus systems (repositories, CMS, research data environments), using APIs and automation where appropriate.

  • Assesses, advises, implements, and manages efficient digital preservation workflows with various systems and departments in the Libraries and across campus.

  • Works closely with colleagues across the Preservation, Special Collections & University Archives, Content Management, and Digital Services departments who create and manage digital content.

  • Participates in library, campus, national, and international professional committees.

  • Contributes to the field through research, presentations, and scholarship.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant Master’s or advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position.

  • One year of working experience in digital preservation or born-digital and digitized content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the digital curation life cycle, digital preservation principles, issues, strategies, standards, and best practices.

  • Applied knowledge of preservation metadata and file format standards.

  • Technical proficiency in applying knowledge of cloud based and standalone digital preservation systems and tools, file format types (e.g., images, software, datasets, sound, containers, binary data, art, etc.)

  • Interest in leveraging emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to streamline processes.

  • Record of professional activities, including scholarly activity, presentations, or engagement in professional organizations to achieve tenure requirements.

Reporting to the Director of the Health Sciences Library, the Health Sciences Librarian will contribute to the University Libraries’ suite of services, including instruction, research support services, collection development, and other liaison and outreach responsibilities. 

The position will work closely with the School of Health Professions to deliver research support and instruction, while also contributing to a team that supports the five health sciences schools, clinical departments, and medical research centers.   •  Work closely with faculty to establish library programs, services, and activities that meet instructional, research, and clinical needs of the assigned department/school as well as other clinical areas.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit seeks legal research professionals interested in challenging research projects, court history, and civic education to join the research team as the Research and Outreach Librarian in Manhattan, NY.

ABOUT THE SECOND CIRCUIT LIBRARY:
The Second Circuit Library provides research services to over 200 circuit, district, magistrate, and bankruptcy judges, over 2,000 court staff, and also serves lawyers, self-represented litigants, and the general public. The Library currently employs 22 staff members circuit-wide and maintains six staffed branch libraries across the circuit.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Research and Outreach Librarian will be stationed at the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in Manhattan, NY with travel to New Haven, CT as needed to assist with projects and other research matters. The Research and Outreach Librarian works as part of a circuit-wide team to provide substantive research expertise and training for judges, court staff, and the public. Typical job duties may include, but are not limited to, the tasks listed below. Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs. 

• Provide legal research services to judges, law clerks, and court staff. 

• Coordinate and conduct library user training and orientation programs, such research training programs.

• Provide group and individual training sessions, both in-person and online, to judges, court staff, and the public. 

• Create content and provide support for the circuit’s civic education project: The Honorable Robert A. Katzmann Justice for All: Courts and the Community Initiative. 

• Conduct historical and archival research for special court events. 

• Review, evaluate, and recommend new online and print resources. 

• Participate in collection development, collection maintenance, and budget management. 

• Develop outreach strategies and educational materials. 

• Work on special projects, as needed. 

• Periodic travel to New Haven, CT is required. 

The Research and Outreach Librarian will report to the Headquarters Librarian.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. 

• Two to five years of professional law library experience in a library that typically supports the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

• Excellent research skills and ability to analyze legal issues. 

• Expertise in analyzing and validating the authority of information, and extrapolating data from all types of resources. 

• Experience teaching to groups, one-on-one, and via web platforms. 

• Experience developing educational and promotional materials and implementing outreach programs. 

• Ability to clearly summarize and communicate research results in writing. 

• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. 

• Strong oral and written communication skills. 

• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Self-motivated, resourceful, and creative.
