Required Qualifications: Masters of Library Sciences from an accredited American Library
Association program or equivalent; A distinguished national/international
reputation for sustained scholarly accomplishments, and a record of excellence
in teaching, research, and service appropriate to appointment at the rank of
Full Professor at a major research university; A minimum of 10 years of
professional library experience in an academic library, including 5 years of
proven administrative and managerial experience in long-range planning, resource
allocation, and personnel development; Substantive and successful experience as
a librarian/higher education administrator; Ability to work effectively with
university senior leadership and with faculty in implementing an ambitious
strategic plan. Commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students;
Strong management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources;
Expertise in collections development and new technology applications;
Demonstrated assessment of library services and collections; Thorough
understanding of the role of technology in research, education, and health care;
Dynamic leadership, superior communication skills and a demonstrated dedication
to student and faculty services are essential.

Brief Description of Duties: Stony Brook Libraries are known for a wide-range of print and digital resources and world-renowned special collections. The Stony Brook Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), with a Health Sciences Center Library that is a member of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The Libraries’ collection exceed 2 million volumes, including e-books, print and electronic holdings of scholarly journal subscriptions, microforms, music recordings, and a sizable map collection. The SBU Libraries include 4 distinct facilities, including Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Math/Physics, and Health Sciences Libraries. The University’s Libraries stand as the largest academic research library on Long Island, serving as a resource in the local community, state-wide, and nationally through the National Network of the National Libraries of Medicine.
For all academic matters, the Dean of University Libraries reports to the Provost, and works closely with the Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences Center. The Dean of Libraries is responsible for: providing a strategic vision and leading the planning and advancement of the SBU Libraries; leading innovation in the Libraries’ collection and technologies; ensuring sound management; representing the SBU Libraries locally and nationally; and leading philanthropic efforts. As the University increases both intra- and extra-campus research activities in a multitude of disciplines, the incumbent will be expected to lead the libraries in the development of new service and collection models to adapt to the shift in information formats and access technologies. The incumbent is required to partner with others across the campus community to create a new type of 21st century information center in support of research and education. Furthermore, the Dean of Libraries will help establish collaborative relationships with other campus entities to address future data retention and dissemination challenges related to such issues as digital preservation, intellectual property, scholarly communication, and unique institutionally-created information.
Special Notes: This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
