Sr. Mgr for Bronx Libraries, NYPL – NY

The New York Public Library is seeking a dynamic, progressive and enthusiastic senior manager to provide leadership and direction to a network of up to 18 community branch libraries in the Bronx, New York. Each community branch library is staffed by a Library Manager and a team of public service professionals. The branch libraries cater to diverse communities providing a rich variety of services inclusive of access to print and non-print material, technology, educational/literacy enrichment & programming for all age groups and a place to meet up with friends or make new ones. The senior manager must possess effective management skills and experience, demonstrated critical thinking skills and be knowledgeable about the administrative and programmatic operations of public libraries in an urban setting.

Reporting to the Vice President for Public Service and the Director of Library Sites and Services, the senior manager will:

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the delivery of services within a network of community branch libraries.
  • Regularly visit community branch libraries to provide leadership and direction to Library Managers on all aspects of the branch administration
  • Select, manage, evaluate and develop a team of Library Managers.
  • Partner and strategize with other NYPL departments to launch new initiatives, resolve staff and operational issues, develop plans and establish annual objectives.
  • Make recommendations regarding the maintenance and improvement of existing library services and facilities and the implementation of new services through the analysis of user insights data, metrics and other feedback mechanisms.
  • Respond appropriately to sensitive or controversial inquiries or complaints and other matters related to the branches within the network.
  • Direct administrative functions such as budget allocation and control, with direct oversight for the procurement of furniture, supplies, and others necessary items.
  • Develop and implement new departmental policies and guidelines in concert with other administrators, managers, and directors.
  • Represent the Library and/or Network at meetings and events with City and State government officials, other organizations and prospective donors to form partnerships, promote the library system and generate support for funding.
  • Drive emerging technology, educational and programming initiatives to benefit users of all age groups.
