F/T - Librarian II - NYPL

Librarian II; New York Public Library



NY Public Library is seeking a Librarian II for its Berg Collection. The incumbent will catalog rare books and manuscripts, will assist researchers, and supervise the proper use of manuscripts

Reporting to the Curator of the Berg Collection, the Librarian II:



◦Catalogs rare books and manuscripts, and other rare materials in USMARC format (later, RDA) in accord with DCRM, RBMS thesauri, and AAT Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, in OCLC and in the Library’s on-line catalog.

◦Serves in the Berg reading room daily, providing assistance to researchers and supervising the proper use of materials, computer, and microform reader in accord with established procedures.

◦Replies in a timely manner to e-mail, fax, telephone, and written reference queries.

◦Supervises interns and volunteers as necessary.

◦Searches online for items in dealer and auction house catalogs as directed by Curator.

◦Assists Curator with special projects as required, possibly including presentations to small groups.

◦Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

◦Bachelor’s degree and an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies, preferably with a special collections specialization; second advanced degree in literature preferred

◦Experience cataloging rare materials in OCLC in accord with DCRM standards and utilizing LCSH

◦Experience working with an integrated library system

◦Proficient computer skills, including applications related to data organization, Microsoft Excel and Access

◦Experience providing in-person and remote public service in a rare book, manuscript, or archive collection

◦Experience giving presentations of rare materials

◦Experience using RBMS Thesauri and AAT Thesaurus for Graphic Materials in cataloging rare materials preferred

◦Experience cataloging in Millenium preferred

◦Experience implementing knowledge of descriptive bibliography preferred

◦Supervisory experience preferred

◦Knowledge of databases and bibliographies related to antiquarian books preferred

◦Experience evaluating and selecting rare materials for conservation treatment preferred
