F/T - Ontology Manager - NYU Health Sciences Library (NY)

Ontology Manager, NYU Health Sciences Library – NYC

The Division of Knowledge Informatics, part of NYU Health Sciences Libraries, seeks an accomplished ontology specialist to join a collaborative effort that spans the mission areas (education, research, and patient care) of NYU Langone Medical Center. This position will develop and manage a repository of controlled terminologies and concepts used throughout the medical center, including in the enterprise data warehouse. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the terminology knowledge base using existing ontologies, and for supplementing standards with institution-specific ontologies and extensions of existing ontologies.

Responsibilities


◦Maintaining local institutional ontologies. This will involve working with ancillary hospital department staff, scientific directors of various Institutes, and individual researchers. The candidate will be involved in mapping, classification, and maintaining concept attributes and semantic links in the knowledge base required to support downstream systems and services.

◦Mapping local sources to standards (such as LOINC, ICD9/10, CPT, Vivo, etc) and, where relevant, mapping between different national standards for use in the master data management of the enterprise data warehouse, as well as for use in specific linked open data applications.

◦Partnering with library and other institutional team members in the implementation of applications using ontologies.

◦Providing expert advice on terminology best practices.

◦Participating in institution-wide data mapping and validation efforts for the enterprise data warehouse implementation.

◦Providing leadership and guidance in a collaborative team on process management for terminology maintenance.


Qualifications


Required


◦Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited program, or a master’s degree in a related discipline, plus training or equivalent years of professional experience in medical informatics.

◦Familiarity with biomedical terminologies.

◦Experience developing ontologies using OWL.

◦Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, including the ability to communicate technical requirements and implications of terminology services to clinical and research staff.

Preferred


◦Experience with clinical data workflow and clinical systems integration issues.

◦Experience with state of the art terminology management systems.

◦Experience implementing ontology-focused applications.

◦Experience with ontologies in data warehouses.
