Content Strategist, NYPL
The ideal candidate combines a history of delivering exceptional online content, a passion for understanding diverse user needs, and a vision for what content can do to increase access, reading, learning, and creativity across New York City and the digital world.
Reporting to the director of Digital Experience, the Content Strategist will lead stakeholders and collaborators across The Library to develop and deliver on the editorial plan, standards, and content production processes required to create engaging, informative content across NYPL’s digital properties. The role is accountable for data analysis and required adjustments in the content plan. Types of content produced across the Library include (but are not limited to):
- A vigorous blogging community promoting the expertise of curators and subject experts, reference staff, branch librarians, and members of the wider scholarly/creative community
- Information about programs and services across 92 locations
- Information about special collections and archival materials
- Information discovery services such as the catalog and reading recommendations
- Resources for teachers, students, and parents
- User-generated content and communities
- Exhibitions, special projects, and interactive tools
- Multimedia content and social media
- Advocacy and development
- User help and technical support
The Content Strategist will work closely with content providers, library technologists and designers, multimedia producers, and a user research team to develop the content management and creation tools needed to tell The Library’s collective story.
Responsibilities:
- Assess and address critical gaps in existing online content policies, standards, and content management tools
- Develop, oversee execution of, and report on editorial plans, content lifecycles, and content goals with the portfolio leaders for all digital service portfolios (e.g. Digital Collections, Education, Reference Services, etc.)
- Establish unified content guidelines and policies across the Library’s digital properties
- Develop training programs for content creators and providers across NYPL
- Devise new content channels/genres that tap into NYPL’s unique collections, expertise, and public mandate
- Work with the product owners and the user research team on audience research, user testing, and digital property analytics
- Lead content data analysis to ensure content engagement
- Ensure that NYPL’s content is fully accessible to people with disabilities
- Partner with Marketing and Communications on distributing content via social media channels, multimedia production, and news for the homepage.
- Establish requirements, user stories, and feature roadmaps for the Library’s content management systems and related tools
- Establish and manage external relationships where needed to ensure delivery on the Library’s content plans
Key Competencies:

- Excellent communication skills, including impeccable writing and editorial skills
- Ability to combine strong creative instincts with data-driven analysis
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or equivalent experience
- At least eight years leading online content development and strategy in a large organization or high-traffic publication/information service
- Commitment to a broad range of audiences (from toddlers to advanced researchers) and a passion for public access
- Fluency in Internet culture , short-form and long-form content
- Proven product management experience
- Expert knowledge of digital content management systems
- Experience with multilingual content, accessibility standards and permissive content licensing schemes
