F/T - Adjunct Reference Librarian - Tamiment Library & Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives (Manhattan)

Description
The Tamiment Library and Wagner Labor Archives, a special collections library in the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library focusing on radical politics, labor, and the Left, is seeking an adjunct reference librarian. Under the direction of the Librarian for Public Services and Instruction, the adjunct reference librarian will staff the Tamiment’s busy public service desk, providing general reference service for Tamiment collections (including books, manuscripts, and A/V materials), monitoring the reading room, assisting onsite and remote researchers with reference requests, and updating and revising LibGuides. This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring archivist or librarian to gain valuable hands-on public services experience.
Responsibilities include: 
  • Greeting and registering researchers to use the library, and explaining the library’s policies and procedures
  • Providing in-person reference assistance and answering email and telephone reference queries
  • Monitoring researchers to ensure proper handling of the collections and adherence to policies
  • Instructing researchers to use the library’s catalog, research guides, and finding aids to identify collections relevant to their research
  • Ordering collections from offsite storage and receiving deliveries of collections and supplies
  • Receiving and logging in photocopy requests, scanning orders, and duplication orders for sound recordings
  • Paging books, serials, oral history, visual, and archival collections
  • Capturing reference statistics and maintaining accurate paperwork trails
  • Responsibilities also include interpreting and applying library policies as appropriate, accurately referring users to appropriate staff members when needed for information, reference or technical questions
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Skills
• Proficiency in database searching and library research, as well as a strong public service
orientation and interest in developing reference skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Aptitude for detail, accuracy, and efficiency; good organizational and analytical skills,
including the demonstrated ability to analyze information requests and to identify appropriate
information sources in response to a broad range of queries.
• Ability to lift boxes weighing 40-50 pounds is required.
Education Required
ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science with a concentration in
archives; candidates with advanced degrees in a relevant subject are and appropriate
experience will also be considered.
