Library Director, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP – NY
Responsibilities/Duties
- Implement, evaluate, and develop strategic plans in support of the Firm’s goals and objectives
- Evaluate, develop and implement policies and procedures ensuring infomation resources are responsive to client needs and in alignment with the Firm’s policies
- Direct, and coordinate work flow, monitor duties and responsibilites, establish goals and supervise day-to-day activities of Library personnel
- Evaulate and select tools for organizing the Library’s content and materials, including library automation systems and database
- Recruit, develop and manage library personnel; conduct annual performance evaluations
- Develop programs, manuals and guides for training library team and clients in the use of the library resources, new technology, aquiring and circulating resources and compliance
- Partner with directors, administrative departments and Information Technology on efficient deliverables of centralized services
- Direct and control expenditures, prepare, and analyze reports and reconcile departmental budget
- Select and renew resources for responding to requests for information with a particular focus on resource format, content and accessibility
- Negotiate renewal contracts and service agreements
- Plan and evaluate space and facility needs
- Plan and conduct staff meetings, identify potential service needs and assess questions of redundancy, technical compatibility, current processes and new products
- Survey the market and stay informed of the latest trends and “best practices” in the industry; improve knowledge of automated technologies and evaluate new products and services
- Perform related work as required
Required Skills
- 8 plus years relevant experience; minimum 5 years of managerial or adminstrative experience
- Experience using automated library systems and providing services in a networked law library
- Knowledge of computers, the internet and commercially available library software
- Knowledge of legal research rescources including Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, Bloomberg Law, Lex Machina, Thomson One, Hoover’s, D&B, and the various SEC filings search
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form
- Ability to assess needs, assign priorities, set goals and objectives, develop strategies, evaulate outcomes and make recommendations
- Ability to organize and prioritize work activities and work independently in a high pressure environment
- Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills, with ability to resolve issues effectively and confidentially and bring projects to completion
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships across all levels of the organization
- Ability to think analytically and to develop new revised systems, procedures and work flow
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
- Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret polices, supervise and counsel staff
- Demonstrated experience effectively directing, organizing, staffing, budgeting, and evaulating library operation
Preferred Skills
- Demonstrated interest in professional development through attending workshops and conferences
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS)
Preferred Education
- MLS degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited school preferred
- Knowledge using Westlaw, Lexis, the Internet and other electronic resources for legal and non-legal research
