Assistant Director, Scherman Music Library, The New School- NY
The Assistant Director manages public services, including
reference and instruction, for the Scherman Music Library at Mannes
College The New School for Music. Duties are concentrated in subject
areas related to music and performing arts. This is a full-time
position. Reporting to the Director of Reference Services.
Assistant Director’s responsibilities include:
-Manage daily operations of the Scherman Music Library;
-Delegate work to union staff and supervise student workers, as needed;
-Work with the Director of Reference Services in identifying and exploring opportunities to increase flexibility in roles, optimize staff and provide personalized service;
-Serve as the contact person and subject liaison for assigned departments and/or programs;
-Oversee collection development for music and the performing arts;
-Oversee reference service to students and faculty of Performance division of The New School including Mannes, Jazz and Drama;
-Provide outreach and effectively communicate with users about the library’s collections and services;
-Participate in the development and evaluation of library instructional program;
-Collaborate in the development of online instructional tools and new instruction applications of technology;
-Work with faculty to provide instruction in appropriate research methodologies through assignment consultations, in-class and online instruction, workshops and one-on-one instruction;
-Maintain current knowledge on relevant subject resources and best practices for academic information services; participate in professional associations and professional development activities;
-Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
M.L.S. from accredited library school
-Degree in music
-Knowledge of classical music literature and music reference sources
-Demonstrated competence of reference and instruction services
-Ability to work effectively with students, faculty and staff, both independently and in a team environment
-Aptitude for learning and applying new technologies and information tools to library operations
-Experience with electronic resources and integrated library systems
-Ability to set and meet competing priorities
-Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
-More than 2 years relevant work experience
Preferred Qualifications::
Advanced degree in music
-Supervisory skills and experience
-Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages
-Knowledge of literature and reference sources within the performing arts
