Project Archivist, Library at New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden is seeking a part-time
archivist for a one year project to process a collection of scientific
records and artwork documenting the achievements and activities of two
distinguished botanists. This is a temporary grant funded position for
21 hours per week. The Project Archivist will:
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
• Arrange and describe unprocessed collections, integrate materials into previously processed collections, refoldering items as needed and labeling all boxes. Processing will follow standard practices using the Society of American Archivists’ Arranging and Describing Archives and Manuscripts as well as local practices
• Take inventory and database a large collection of botanical artwork
• Compile online finding guides for all processed collections in accordance with established professional standards following the RLG Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description
Qualifications
Should have a background in archival studies and possess or be studying towards a master’s degree in library science with formal training in archives procedures. Should have familiarity with library technologies, knowledge of archival standards, strong analytical, communication, and writing skills, and the ability to lift and shelve boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
