The Academy for Jewish Religion, a pluralistic rabbinical and
cantorial school located in Yonkers NY, seeks a Librarian. This
is a solo, part-time (15 hours per week) professional position, located
at the academy.
Overall Function:
The
librarian will maintain and further develop the AJR collection of
books, journals, and other materials (currently almost 10,000 volumes)
related to the mission of AJR, namely the pluralistic education of
rabbis and cantors. As information
specialist, the librarian provides leadership and expertise in the
selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information
resources and technologies in all formats, as well as expertise in the
ethical use of information. The librarian will work
collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the
policies of the school library program, and to guide and direct all
activities related to it. We recognize that this could be a full time
position, but at this point we only have funding
for a part time position. We will work with the librarian to
prioritize responsibilities so that the librarian can be successful in
this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.
Oversee daily operations.
2.
Access and catalog new materials into the collection.
3.
Oversee evaluation of donated material, and carry out weeding.
4.
Responsible for budget management and purchasing.
5.
Organize and supervise volunteers as needed.
6.
Provide reference service as needed.
7.
Conduct library orientation/training classes for new students.
8.
Conduct strategic planning in concert with AJR leadership.
9.
Engage in long range planning of development of library.
Required Knowledge or Experience:
Masters
degree in Library or Information Science from an accredited
institution; working knowledge of Hebrew; degree in Jewish Studies
preferred.
Current in knowledge of library and information technology.
Ability to work as a member of a team with the administration and
faculty as well as the ability to work independently in developing
policies and carrying out day to
day duties.
