Reference Librarian (History/Genealogy), NYPL – NY
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the division manager, the Librarian:
- Provides specialized subject reference services, both onsite and offsite, using print and electronic resources
- Updates and creates content for Web pages, user guides, and training materials
- Develops and teaches classes for the public
- Assists with collection maintenance and catalog description
- Participates in activities related to the fulfillment of NYPL’s Digital Strategy, including the creation of metadata and social media activities
- Maintains a personal program of continuous education and professional development
- Performs related duties as required

Qualifications:
- ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies
- Undergraduate degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences
- Demonstrated knowledge of United States history through academic background or equivalent training or expertise
- Successfully demonstrated public service experience and the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with patrons and staff
- Successfully demonstrated knowledge of authoritative humanities resources in print and electronic formats
- Demonstrated experience using online catalogs, electronic databases, and Internet sources in reference work
- Successfully demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to articulate and express ideas clearly in presentations and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated computer and word processing skills, including MS Word and Excel
- Knowledge of genealogy preferred
Work Environment:
Public library setting
Hours:
35 hours per week to be scheduled
Monday-Saturday 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.
Evenings and alternating Saturday as required

Physical Duties:
- Lifting up to 15 lbs.
- Sitting and standing for periods of time
