Special Collections Librarian, The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History – NY
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Maintain and expand information on the Collection in the PastPerfect database
- Catalogue new acquisitions; edit and update existing catalogued content
- Digitization of historical documents as needed
- Correspond with researchers and institutions concerning their inquiries about the Collection; assist with scholarly collections study
- Handle requests from the Education Department for information concerning the Collection
- Conduct outreach activities relating to the Collection for audiences including teachers, students, donors and the general public
- Assist in preparation of exhibitions
- Manage outgoing loans
- Other related duties
Education & Experience
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:- Bachelor’s degree in History, with an emphasis on American History
- Master’s degree in Museum Studies or Library Science with a specialization in archives
- Fluency with collection databases
- Demonstrated ability to write and speak about primary source materials for educational use
- Demonstrated writing skills, comfortable with public speaking, and ability to work with a team
- Flexible and able to multitask
- Available to work occasional weekends and evenings
- Demonstrated knowledge of collections security, care & maintenance
- Demonstrated interest and experience in supporting K-12 educators (familiarity with the Common Core State Standards is a plus)
- Develop and write materials based on the Collection for educational purposes
