Archivist, NY Transit Museum (NY)

The New York Transit Museum seeks one Archivist to assist the Museum Collection staff on a grant funded project to improve the overall Collection Management process from ingest to access.  The mission of the New York Transit Museum is to: Collect, exhibit, interpret, and preserve the history, sociology, and technology of public transportation systems in the New York metropolitan region and conduct research and educational programs that make its extensive collection accessible and meaningful to the broadest possible audience.​ 

The Collection Management department at the NYTM would like to reevaluate a few key components of our process to better contribute to the Museum’s mission. During this grant funded process the Archivist will be working closely with the Museum Collection staff and a Digital Collection Specialist on a three tiered Collection Management restructuring. This includes the following:  1. Evaluate how material is transferred to the Museum from the various agencies, in what format it is transferred and come up with a comprehensive methodology for improving this process.

2. Survey the Museum Collection and identify what is most frequently accessed and what would benefit from a large­scale digitization project to improve access. Come up with a long­range plan for digitization including time­frames and budgets for various collections. 

3. Working with the Digital Curator, evaluate possibilities for a new Collection Management System and/or Digital Asset Management System as well as a public digital collection interface.  

Qualifications The Archivist should have an MLIS degree or at least three years experience working with archival and/or museum collections; fluency in archival standards; experience evaluating records for preservation and retention; knowledge of CMS and DAM systems; knowledge of various scanning and metadata processes; willingness and ability to research and apply new technologies, in particular for born­digital materials; capacity to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to prepare policies and procedures for records transfer
