Assistant Head of Research and Instructional Services

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned
college of Art and Design, Liberal Arts and Business and Technology, of
the State University of New York (SUNY), invites nominations and
applications for a full-time tenure-track non classroom
faculty position in the Gladys Marcus Library at FIT.
Job Description:
This position is responsible for expanding the instructional reach of
the Library by participating in planning, implementing, and evaluating
instruction related programs and services, designing digital learning
resources, updating online instructional content.
This is a leadership position, part of the Research and Instructional
Services Unit and is responsible for developing, integrating and
assessing dynamic, instructionally focused research services.
Responsibilities also include assisting with the management
of Research and Instructional Services (RIS) personnel and substituting
for the Head of Research and Instructional Services as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Reports to Head of Research and Instructional Services
* Coordinates Research and Instructional Services personnel (Reference
Librarians and the Reference Assistant I and II) in the absence of or as
assigned by the Head of Research and Instructional Services
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Research and Instructional Services:
* Develops, manages and promotes library instruction and information literacy goals
* Teaches, implements and assesses library instruction including
classes, embedded librarianship, web-based tutorials, workshops, pop-up
publicity and other forms of outreach and promotional materials
* Works with Library Web Management Team to maintain and develop area web pages and content
* Leads special technology projects including expanding the Library's
web presence, creating webinars for faculty, creating digital learning
objects and responding to need-specific distance learning
* Assists the Head of RIS with institutional assessment initiatives
including designing programs and learning modules to assess students'
information literacy skills
* Facilitates dynamic engagement and partnerships between Library and
Classroom Faculty; collaborates with all faculty to integrate
information literacy across the curriculum
* Creates, implements and coordinates training programs and workshops
(e.g. library instruction techniques, new technologies, etc.) for, and
in collaboration with Library personnel to support professional
development
* Delivers formal and informal instruction for individuals and/or groups of library users
* Creates, implements and coordinates orientations and tours
* As a leader in instructional design, develops and manages course materials for library instruction
* Works at the Reference Services Desk, including answering patron
questions in person, by phone, and electronically (text, e-mail, chat,
etc.)
Unit / Compliance Responsibilities
* Optimizes Library personnel scheduling for a growing integrated
information literacy instruction program while maintaining individual
research services support seven days a week.
* Assists with managing the Library's instruction program schedule
* Coordinates orientation events for new, and existing, students and faculty
* Coordinates public relations content for RIS including publicity, web pages, reports and statistics
* Determines staff scheduling needs for Research Services Desk
* Contributes to unit goals, objectives, policies and procedures in conjunction with Library and College guidelines
* Reviews and recommends best practices for unit operations to achieve continuous improvement objectives
* Maintains and promotes interdepartmental communication
Library and College Faculty Responsibilities and Professional Development
* Participates in Library governance and campus-wide initiatives and committees
* Functions as a Library liaison with corresponding department(s) and
participates in collection development focused on reference collection
management
* Participates in the Library's strategic planning process and
implements policies and procedures that support the FIT Strategic Plan
and the Library Administrative Review
* Participates in curricular and pedagogical discussions by attending
college-wide, school and departmental meetings. Partners with Classroom
Faculty to represent the perspective of the College, and its
departments, to other Library personnel
* Seeks additional partnerships with Enrollment Management and Student
Success and Information Technology that reach beyond the classroom to
develop and reinforce students' information fluency
* Seeks relationships with other institutions, including collaborative initiatives
* Active membership in local, state, and national professional
organizations while staying abreast of current topics in the field
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* ALA accredited MLS. Needs to have two years professional (post-MLS experience) and five years of management experience
* Strong public service orientation and enthusiasm for an evolving, collaborative environment
* Proven leadership abilities and effective communication skills
* Experience with supervising and evaluating personnel
* Knowledge of information literacy concepts, trends, and standards
* Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies especially those
relating to research services and instruction as it applies to online
learning on and off-campus
* Experience with a variety of teaching concepts, learning styles, and
instructional technologies to enhance all forms of library instruction,
services, and assessment of student learning outcomes
* Commitment to communicating effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
* Experience with managing large scale projects
