F/T - Media Svcs Librarian, Suffolk Comm College (NY)













POSITION DESCRIPTION: Announcement is hereby made for a permanent 10-month position, beginning the Fall 2013 semester on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. The Media/Reader Services Librarian works with a collaborative team that is dedicated to student learning.  He/she will be responsible for advancing the use of instructional technology, participating in the planning, promotion and teaching of information literacy, providing reference services and developing library collections.

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

Job Description: 
General Responsibilities Include:
·         Design innovative multimedia and web-based instructional materials, which could include Camtasia tutorials, LibGuides, etc.
·         Teach students critical thinking skills in using and evaluating library information resources.
·         Provide in-person and online reference services, and library instructional sessions.
·         Work with discipline faculty to infuse information literacy across the curriculum and incorporate advances in providing media resources in the classroom.
·         Develop print, media, and electronic collections.
·         Participate on departmental, campus and college committees, including the SCCC Library Media Committee.
·         Other duties as assigned by the campus head librarian

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: An ALA accredited master’s degree in library science is required. Two years of information literacy experience in an academic setting.  Knowledge and ability to create online guides and ability to teach in an online environment.  This position is tenure-track, full-time with an academic calendar schedule.

Required technology skills include:
  • Providing leadership in producing online tutorials and learning objects 
  • Strong HTML skills preferred
  • Ability to assist and instruct other librarians with new teaching technologies and software
  • Online teaching skills either in course management system or through media software such as Adobe Connect, etc.
  • Use of virtual reference tools such as Zotero, LibAnswers, LibChat, Google Docs.
  • Knowledge of electronic signage and marketing of the library

HIRING SALARY: The exact salary will be determined by prior teaching experience and placement on the salary scale negotiated by the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College.
