Reference Librarian, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP is a global law firm with offices in New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, São Paulo, Seoul, Tokyo and Washington, D.C. Established in 1884, the Firm currently has more than 850 lawyers. The firm is looking for a temp, part-time librarian for a period from January till May. Hours are M, W, F, from 10 AM until 6 PM.
The Reference Librarian is responsible for providing reference and specialized research assistance to attorneys and administrative personnel through the use of varied databases and print resources.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Conduct in-depth research in a wide range of areas using multiple online and print resources
- Produce competitive intelligence reports for the Firm’s business development efforts in the form of league tables, etc.
- Respond to Corporate, Litigation, Tax, and General reference questions
- Handle research projects for corporate, litigation, financial, and other areas.as requested by attorneys and staff
- Assist in location of specific material including but not limited to case law, statutory law, regulations, legislative history, secondary sources, directories, periodicals and business information
- Utilize online resources to obtain biographical material of individuals, including potential expert witnesses, potential arbitrators, witnesses, etc.
- Perform database searches to locate treatises and other material held by other libraries to fulfill requests
- Instruct attorneys and other personnel on the use of Internet-based legal research programs, and emerging electronic resources
- Maintain file of law-related survey material
- Stay abreast of industry trends by reviewing legal and library publications, attending professional association seminars and meetings and receiving regular training from vendors
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Possess extensive knowledge of legal and non-legal resources; including knowledge of accounting resources and documents (e.g. SEC filings)
- Familiarity with print law library research publications and sources
- Highly proficient in the use of digital research resources including, but not limited to, Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, BloombergLaw, Lex Machina, Thomson One, Hoover’s, D&B, and the various SEC filings search resources
- Proficiency using standard office software applications (e.g. MS Word, Excel and Outlook)
Preferred Experience
- 3 years of reference experience in a law library setting
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
Preferred Education
- Master’s degree in Library Science preferred
Required Qualifications
- 4 to 6 years of relevant experience required
