Library Cataloger

Position Summary
The American Numismatic Society, located in New York City, invites applications for a part-time Cataloger position. The Cataloger’s primary focus will be on original and copy cataloging using MARC 21 for monographs, auction catalogs, and other items, as well as the indexing of articles in English and foreign languages, using the Library’s Koha ILS. The Cataloger will also help to carry out the day-to-day activities of the Library, such as visitor services, acquisitions, and research support for members, curators, scholars, and students participating in the Society’s annual Eric P. Newman Summer Seminar in numismatics.

Its Library, the finest of its kind in North America and one of the largest in the world, maintains books, articles, catalogs, and a significant archives covering the full range of subjects relevant to the history of the world’s currencies and medallic art.

Qualifications
Professional experience as a library cataloger using MARC 21 is preferred. An MLIS/MLS degree is not required but preference will be given to candidates who have completed, or are enrolled in, an ALA-accredited graduate library degree program. Familiarity with numismatic, art historical, or archaeological publications is highly desirable. Also favored will be candidates with training in academic disciplines relevant to the Society’s missions and a reading-level understanding of languages other than English. Knowledge of archival principles and descriptive conventions would also be desirable. Attention to detail and organization, an ability to work collegially, and a 
commitment to providing customized service to the library's users are all essential qualities. The candidate must be able to lift heavy boxes.

Hours and Compensation
Average of 19 hours per week. Some flexibility with hours, scheduled on weekdays between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.
