Digital Resources and Instructional Librarian (part time), Thomas J. Watson Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art



General Description:

The Thomas J. Watson Library seeks a librarian for the part-time position (twenty-one hours per week) of Digital Resources and Instructional Librarian. This person will play an active role in the development, assessment, and instructional support for Watson Library’s extensive collection of online resources. This person will also take a hands-on role in the library’s digitization program and will work to enhance access to digital content. This position participates in the quantitative and qualitative assessment of library programs and services, including managing data collection, statistical analysis and reporting, and coordinating and centralizing assessment data. Scheduled reference service in Nolen or Watson Library, as well as occasional weekend work, is required.



Primary Responsibilities:

Develops instructional programs, leads classes on the use of the library’s collection, and provides outreach to museum volunteers, staff, and outside researchers; monitors and schedules requests for individualized instruction; provides reference service; participates in the evaluation and documentation of subscription databases; compiles library-wide statistical reports and analysis of database usage data; responds to statistical requests and develops assessment instruments for learning outcomes; participates in the library’s digitization efforts through updates and enhancements of the library’s ContentDM site; assists with maintenance of the library site.



Requirements:

MLS from an accredited program; knowledge of major electronic and print art sources; excellent instructional and public speaking skills; experience developing and delivering instructional programs and providing reference service in an academic or research library; experience with assessment methodologies, WordPress software, and working with an integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces preferred); strong Excel skills; demonstrated ability to handle complex analytical and detailed work. Academic background in art history preferred.



Familiarity with one or more major digital content management systems (ContentDM preferred); knowledge of current digital library technologies, standards, and best practices; experience in developing websites and/or web applications (minimum 2 years of web design and development experience is preferred); experience creating, editing, and transforming MARC and/or non-MARC metadata (Microsoft Excel and/or MarcEdit preferred).



This position is an opportunity for a librarian to engage in a broad range of library roles encompassing digitization, online resources, instruction, and public services. The ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team-based environment is important. The successful candidate will be willing to provide outstanding customer service to a broad patron base with a diverse set of skills, including volunteers, outside visitors, and research staff. Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential.



Thomas J. Watson Library is the research library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its collection of more than 800,000 titles, representing the encyclopedic scope of the Museum, is one of the most comprehensive in the world. There is a staff of 41. Approximately 20,000 books were added to the collection last year. While there is a strong commitment to maintain the distinction of printed publications, the library has developed an extensive collection of online resources to support the study of art. The library has also built significant digital collections and this program is increasingly active.
