The Albert Einstein College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the Director of the D. Samuel Gottesman Library and Knowledge Services. The library is an integral partner in the clinical, research and patient care roles of the medical school and its affiliated academic medical centers. Einstein is a research-intensive institution with more than $200 million in grants from NIH for the federal 2010 year. Einstein is home to 724 M.D. students, 256 Ph.D. students, 122 students in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program, 1,200 resident physicians, and 375 postdoctoral research fellows. Over 2,500 current faculty members and 8,000 Einstein alumni are among the nation’s foremost clinicians, biomedical scientists, and medical educators.
The Library’s goal is to provide knowledge-based services, specialized assistance in the use of information, and user training programs to take advantage of the rapidly evolving digital information world. The Library’s holdings include more than 7,000 full-text electronic journals, 7,000 electronic books, 97,000 monographs and 300 electronic databases. There are 180,000 user visits to the library per year and over 10 million page views of the Library’s web site. The library’s budget is approximately $4 million and the present staff includes 8 librarians, a systems administrator and 11.5 support staff. We have just completed a total renovation of the Library’s Central Reading Room, a Quiet Room, several group and individual Study Rooms, and the Reference/Circulation area.
Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Director of the Library must show leadership and a pro-active vision as research libraries continue to change. The Director must take the lead in programs and workshops to promote the use of evidence-based medicine and self-directed information literacy. Finally, the Director must be a superior role model for its talented librarians and staff in pursuit of Einstein’s overarching missions.

Experience
The final candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressive supervisory or management experience, including work in an academic health science library. A Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association is required.
