Position Focus:

The Metadata Librarian, Spanish and Portuguese Languages, is a skilled and collaborative member of Monographic Processing Services who supports the descriptive metadata needs for a broad spectrum of materials in the Yale University Library system. The position specializes in materials written in Spanish, Portuguese, and other related languages from a variety of countries. Contributions to Yale Library and our users include:

Original and complex copy cataloging.

Subject analysis and classification.

Authority and entity management work.

Working with selectors and other stakeholders to determine appropriate descriptive practices and workflows for particular collections within the scope of YUL and established metadata standards and best practices.

Documentation.

Project management.

Goal setting and strategic planning.

Training and revising work of librarians, bibliographic assistants, and students.

Descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards and the requirements of Yale’s local online system. The Metadata Librarian keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends, and applies new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate. Subject analysis and classification assignment follow Library of Congress standards and local practice. Authority records follow NACO standards and are contributed to the national authority file. The Metadata Librarian contributes to Yale University Library technical services goal-setting and strategic planning and to decision-making on library technical services policy and procedures. The person in this role seeks opportunities to contribute to Yale Library through participation in committees, task forces, working groups, and projects. The Metadata Librarian is active professionally in external organizations.

Essential Duties

1. Provides original cataloging/creates metadata for materials in all formats and subject areas. Applies descriptive standards (RDA, AACR2, DCRM, DACS, or VRC, etc.), structural standards (MARC, MODS, METS or EAD, etc.), and controlled vocabularies (LCNAF, or LCSH, etc,). Creates authority records applying standards and best practices, and assigns call numbers using Library of Congress Classification system. 2. Provides intellectual and physical management of ORBIS and other library databases. This may include authority control, record loading, ingesting objects, quality assurance processes, and working with stakeholders throughout the library community. 3. Analyzes bibliographic and metadata problems, recommends policies, develops processes and best practices, and creates documentation. 4. Engages with cataloging and technical service staff, other librarians, curators, and collection managers in an effort to meet their needs, and the needs of our users. 5. Researches, plans and oversees special projects. 6. May manage vendor services and relationships. 7. Trains and revises the work of students, assistants and other librarians. 8. Participates in national metadata/cataloging initiatives, i.e. the Program for Cooperative Cataloging programs (BIBCO, NACO, SACO). 9. Participates in the library's management, assessment, training and development programs. 10. Keeps abreast of national and international developments including new metadata standards, technologies, trends, and techniques. 11. Establishes a record of service to the Library, the University and the profession. 12. May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts. 13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

1. Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited library school. In selective cases a graduate degree in a related subject field may be substituted. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of current national cataloging/metadata content and structural standards. Knowledge of subject analysis and classification systems. 3. If supervision of professional and/or support staff is a principal responsibility, supervisory experience is required. 4. Experience designing projects and bringing them to conclusion in a timely fashion. 5. Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications; analytical ability; accuracy and attention to detail. 6. Ability to initiate and adapt to change. 7. Experience working collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations. 8. Experience working collaboratively and independently with varied groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing, team environment.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent communication skills in English and excellent reading and writing knowledge in Spanish or Portuguese.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Knowledge of RDA, LC-PCC PS, MARC, LCSH, LCC, and PCC standards, and good understanding of authority control. Familiarity with current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services, and developments in metadata (Linked data, BIBFRAME, etc.)

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent computer skills. Experience with bibliographic services such as OCLC and network-based cataloging tools. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and familiarity with batch-load processing tools such as MarcEdit.

Demonstrated ability to succeed in a collaborative, team-based environment. Ability to set priorities and adhere to deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Commitment to a high level of service to faculty, staff and students.

 Answering online chat inquiries, using museum reservation software, assisting patrons in the use of library resources including electronic resources and devices.

Job Description

The Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS) is seeking a highly responsible individual to serve as a Records Analyst in the Municipal Records Management Division (MRMD).  DORIS is responsible for establishing and implementing City-wide records management policies and protocols. The experienced records analyst who will be part of an expert team working with New York City agencies to plan for the transition to digital records management and implementation of an enterprise-wide Electronic Records Management System. The records analyst will be tasked with assisting with establishing guidelines and developing best practices around Information and Records Management in order to implement the Mayoral Directive on records management. The Records Analyst will work closely with the Acting Director of Municipal Records Management to research records management (RM) best practices, analyze data, create reports, and assist in other MRMD operations and functions. Key Responsibilities:   Conducts various research projects on RM best practices and creates reports documenting findings.   Surveys city agencies regarding their technology programs, platforms, processes used for records management, archiving, digitization, and storage.   Develops and maintains reports as required.   Works with senior managers in gathering data and documentation of current RM practices.   Assists with maintaining the records management database which contains agencies record retention schedules, accession projects and disposal applications.   Works independently, with appropriate supervision, and exercises a high degree of judgment, tact, and initiative.

Learning Resource Center Technician

Reports to: Learning Resource Center Manager

Position Summary:

This position serves as a Learning Resource Center (LRC) Technician in a medium-sized career college. The LRC Technician assists the LRC Manager in helping faculty, staff, and students in the use of Learning Resource Center resources and equipment and performs routine clerical duties related to the operation of the LRC. Frequently works unsupervised and is expected to solve problems independently. This employee provides information services and circulation services to students and faculty using print and electronic sources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs tasks assigned by the LRC Manager
Abides by and enforce the policies and procedures of the LRC and the college
• Maintains good relations with the students and other staff, individually and in general

Works as a team with the LRC Manager and work-study student workers
Informs the LRC Manager of any ongoing events or issues that require attention
Assists students and faculty in location of print and non-print resources
• Assists in maintaining student LRC check-in records to assess student usage of LRC

• Answers basic research questions

• Assists students and faculty with minor computer troubleshooting

• Performs circulation duties

• Logs in journals

• Handles routine problems under the guidance of supervisor

• Keeps supervisor informed of departmental needs and concerns

• Assists in identifying weaknesses in the print collection

• Conducts library orientations for new students and faculty

• Attends pertinent meetings or training courses and undertake special training
activities as directed

Monitors student use of the library
Maintains supply of instructional handouts
Shelves print and audiovisual materials
Shelves read the print collection

Assists LRC Manager in processing and maintaining library collections
• Assists in maintaining the appearance of the LRC

Assists in training LRC work-study student assistants
Maintains paper supply in LRC printers
Assists in the cataloging of print materials
Maintains active communications with the LRC Manager, including maintenance of work documentation (may include work journal or wiki)
Other duties as assigned

Required:

• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

• Proven problem-solving ability

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power
Point

• Ability to work independently, without direct supervision

• Proactive, willing to ask questions and accept constructive criticisms

• Ability to communicate clearly in both speaking and writing

• Ability to maintain professional attitude

• High School diploma

• Physical mobility to perform light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, and sitting at
a desk.

• Keyboard skills

• Ability to read printed and on-screen information

• Ability to answer the telephone

 
Preferred:

• Successful experience working in library systems or a combination of other
educational programs and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills,
and abilities

• Current enrollment in, or recent completion of, an MLIS program

• Ability to use electronic databases

• Familiarity with online healthcare journal databases
