Ref/International Law Librarian, NYU (NY)

 Position Announcement: Reference/Foreign, Comparative & International Law Librarian


Description

This position is one member of a two-person team responsible for collection development, in-depth reference services, and training relating to the Law Library’s world-renowned collection of foreign, comparative and international law (FCIL). The FCIL librarians are also a part of the larger department of Research & Scholarship and report to the Associate Director for Research & Scholarship. The new librarian will work alongside an experienced FCIL colleague.


Responsibilities:

  • Supporting and contributing to an equitable, inclusive, empathetic, kind, efficient, respectful, communicative, and collaborative work community.
  • Developing and managing the FCIL law collection in print and electronic formats, focusing on public international law, private international law, international sales law, and international trade law.
  • Collaborating with the acquisitions department to further develop and manage the FCIL collection in concert with budget projections.
  • Evaluating new websites and databases for foreign, comparative, and international law and sharing in the maintenance of public webpages that list these resources.
  • Cooperating with counterparts at other research libraries to share information about FCIL resources.
  • Serving as a library liaison to constituents throughout the Law School, including faculty, students, centers and clinics.
  • Providing specialized legal research instruction to meet the needs of those constituents; teaching formats may include live lectures, online presentations, individual instruction, research guides and a range of other written materials; topics may include public international law, international sales law, and other specialized topics as requested.
  • Serving as a member of the Law Library’s general reference team, the FCIL librarian will::
    • provide high-caliber Anglo-American and FCIL legal reference service to Law School faculty and students;
    • serve as a library liaison and provide proactive and personalized library services for faculty, including complex research, research assistant training and the tracking of faculty scholarship;
    • assist in the staffing of the in-person and virtual reference desk, a task that entails some evening and weekend hours;
    • author and update research guides, bibliographies, and other types of instructional material; and
    • perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • M.L.S. & J.D. (or equivalents) from accredited institutions.
  • Experience providing in-depth and complex legal research and reference support.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or interest in foreign, comparative and international law.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong public service orientation
  • The ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse student body and staff, as well as a commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • 1-3 years of academic library experience.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in foreign and international law collection development.
  • Foreign language skills.


Classification:
This is a renewable contract position (Assistant Librarian of Practice) as a member of the Law Library Faculty.
Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Excellent benefits package.
