Position: Reference & Data Services Librarian
This reference position is one of a team of professional librarians in the Research & Scholarship department, and reports to the Associate Director for Research & Scholarship. The principal duties of this position are providing reference service to our faculty and students, serving as a library liaison to various faculty members, teaching legal research to various constituencies, creating research guides in areas of subject specialization, and participating in collection development activities. In addition, this position will be responsible for advising and collaborating with Law School community members on empirical legal research projects.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serving as a member of the Law Library’s general reference team, the candidate is expected to be able to:
- Provide high-caliber legal reference service to Law School faculty and students.
- Serve as a library liaison, and provide proactive and personalized library services for faculty, including complex research, research assistant training and the tracking of faculty scholarship.
- Assist in the staffing of the in-person and virtual reference desk, a task that entails some evening and weekend hours.
- Author and update research guides, bibliographies, and other types of instructional material.
- perform other duties as assigned.
- Serving as Data Services Librarian, the candidate is expected to be able to:
- Provide research assistance to faculty and students in discovering analyzing, managing and using data
- Advise scholars concerning research tools and methods that might make the empirical research process more efficient and effective.
- Contribute to decision-making on data platform and other related priorities.
- Stay abreast of trends and developments in data services and information technology and enhances that knowledge among other library staff members.
- Provide training as needed.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- M.L.S. (or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to provide legal research and reference support.
- Experience or interest in the use of datasets, and some familiarity with online data repositories and/or data sources relevant to law, business, human rights, public opinion, and other social science fields.
- Interest or experience in supporting researcher engaged in qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
- Interest or experience with data visualization software such as Tableau and other common tools used in data research.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- 1-3 years of professional law library experience, with academic library experience preferred.
- J.D. or graduate degree in a field related to law, statistics, data analysis, or social science research.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in working with and supporting individuals across the lifecycle of empirical research projects.
- Knowledge or interest in statistical modeling and data mining techniques.
This is a non-tenure track faculty (Assistant Librarian of Practice) position, and after the first year is eligible for multi-year contracts.
