Outreach Services Specialist, Nassau Library System

This is an excellent career opportunity for a progressive librarian who wants to make a difference.
Enthusiastic and energetic "people-person" with initiative sought. This is a state-mandated position.
NLS is not subject to Civil Service.  This position is part of the collective bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

Work with 54 autonomous member libraries to help them develop and enhance their services to several state-specified target populations including senior citizens, ethnic and language minorities, persons with disabilities, the educationally disadvantaged, the unemployed and underemployed, and individuals residing in institutions.

Inform  ♦  Encourage  ♦  Advise  ♦  Facilitate  ♦  Coordinate

Encourage member library staff to reflect the changing demographics and increasing diversity of their communities in their collections and services.
Develop and maintain relationships with agencies serving and advocating for the target populations.  Promote collaboration and partnerships.
Keep current with public library outreach issues, opportunities, best practices and trends.
Develop and offer continuing education opportunities for member library staff on traditional outreach topics as well as community engagement topics such as marketing/PR, customer service, readers advisory, and communication.
Serve individuals at the Nassau County Correctional Facility by conducting programs, including a regular book club, and coordinating the acquisition of library materials. Maintain strong relationships with staff at the facility.
Represent Nassau libraries and coordinate member library involvement at community events. 
Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

M.L.S. from an ALA accredited library school and at least 3 years of relevant experience.
Flexible, versatile, creative and resourceful.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Track record of effective meeting facilitation and delivering engaging presentations.
Commitment to excellent customer service.
Willingness and ability to work in a collegial environment as a team member.
Requires use of personal auto.  Reimbursed for mileage.

Compensation

Starting salary $59,000-$69,000 depending on relevant experience and qualifications.
