Part-Time Metadata Services Librarian, Queens Public Library
Duties and Responsibilities
The Metadata Services Librarian performs metadata record cleanup and creates new collection and item level metadata as part of the implementation of a new digital asset management system for Queens Public Library’s (QPL’s) archival collections. This position is responsible for metadata quality control, database maintenance and authority control tasks. Contributes to orderly movement of materials through processing workflow. Performs other duties as required.
Metadata Creation
Creates original catalog records and performs metadata cleanup for VRA, DC, MARC and EAD records for archival materials (photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, newspapers, books, maps and musical scores.) Searches for records and enhances when needed. Utilizes print and database reference tools to inform professional decision-making.
Database Maintenance
This position performs database searching and maintenance for bibliographic and authority records. Upload of digital assets and metadata to digital asset management system. Creation of original authority records including corporate, series title, and personal name records.
Best Practices Leadership and Training
Maintains up-to-date expertise in the rapidly changing digital archives field, taking a lead on behalf of the library to bring new developments and standards into the library’s practices. Trains staff, volunteers and interns as needed on digital archives projects and conducts quality control reviews on completed records.
Position Information
- The rate of pay for this position is $35.36 per hour.
- Flexible schedule with a maximum of 17 hours per week.
- This is a temporary grant-funded position through to May 30, 2026.
- This is a non-union position.
- Part-time positions do not offer any medical or health benefits.
Education and Experience/Qualifications
MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library school. New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate. Previous cataloging experience required, familiarity with VRA Core, EAD and MARC formats preferred. Experience with archival processing, digital asset management systems, digital imaging and digital preservation required. Familiarity with Adobe and Microsoft Office Suites preferred. Fluency with language spoken in Queens preferred. Able to perform independently, be self-motivated, adapt to constant change, and juggle multiple tasks with a positive attitude. Attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work well as a team member. Willingness to adapt to new technologies and processes.
