F/T - Lecturer, CUNY-Queens (NY)

 

The Graduate School of Library & Information Studies (GSLIS) at Queens College, CUNY, has a position for a Lecturer. The GSLIS is the only publicly supported American Library Association accredited school of library and information studies in the metropolitan New York City area. The GSLIS has a large and highly diverse student body.

Primary responsibilities will include teaching classes in information studies, overseeing student recruitment and admissions to the GSLIS degree and certificate programs, advising students on their program of study, and overseeing degree completion. The appointee will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The successful candidate will have experience of information work in the New York City area, with a good working knowledge of the library systems, professional associations and the needs of the profession. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the diversification of the field, social justice and equity.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, which may include evenings and weekends, the successful candidates are expected to assist the needs of the Department in the areas of administration, student advisement, etc. The College expects faculty participation in its diverse activities and a commitment to render service to the College and the profession as well. A commitment to establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with students, colleagues, and staff representing diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Experience using technology as an instructional aide where appropriate to enhance learning is also required.

The Lecturer will serve as the departmental advisor for students and will share responsibility for committee and departmental assignments that may have administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The successful candidate will also have:

· Ability to work in a team environment and provide leadership.

· Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking.

· Ability to interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, professional staff, campus administrators, and personnel in various campus departments and maintain cooperative working relationships.

· Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, adaptability, and skills in recognizing politically sensitive situations, maintains confidentiality of student records and advisory discussions.

· Multicultural competencies; the ability to work with diverse populations. Experience in communicating and working with international students with diverse backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Master's in Library Science

Preferred Qualifications

Two to five years of professional experience

· Teaching experience at the university level.

· Experience supporting a graduate program in a university environment.

· Demonstrated experience using student records systems for articulation, transcript evaluation and degree certification.

· Experience in using online applications such as online student information, courses registration, course maintenance, data query, and teaching evaluation systems.

· Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

COMPENSATION

COMPENSATION Salary Range: $77,517 - $82,102

Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 -- City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
