Technical Svcs Mgr, Great Neck Lib (NY)

Technical Services Manager

The Great Neck Library is seeking an energetic individual to provide leadership, professional expertise and coordination for all aspects of online services (acquisitions, automation, cataloging, processing and circulation) for our multi-branch library system.  This senior position supervises, manages and coordinates the flow of library materials through the Technical Services and Circulation departments.


Duties and Responsibilities include:

⦁    Manage our Sierra, Vega and Encore Systems
⦁    Coordinate the installation new software upgrades
⦁    Manage the configuration and updates of the online systems. These services include the library catalog (Innovative Interface), LILink, OCLC, WorldCat, WorldShare and other programs.
⦁    Work closely and collaboratively with vendors and other partners as needed to maintain library systems
⦁    Ensure compliance with authorization policies and license agreements.
⦁    Use analytical, technical and troubleshooting skills as needed.
⦁    Material Ordering
⦁    Weekly staff scheduling, staff supervision of clerks and librarians
⦁    Staff Evaluations
⦁    Function as person-in-charge of the library on scheduled nights and weekends
⦁    Position may involve prolong periods of sitting and lifting of up to 25 lbs.

Qualifications & Experience Required:


⦁    Knowledge of bibliographic record structures such as MARC, etc. and other metadata. Knowledge of RFID.
⦁    Technical knowledge of library services and supporting data (including Acquisitions, Circulation, Cataloging and Electronic Resource management)
⦁    Experience in Project Management and Library Technology
⦁    Knowledge of RFID and library software; Sierra Cataloging and Acquisitions modules, OCLC and WorldShare
⦁    Fluency with Excel spreadsheet and data manipulation
⦁    Masters of Library Science or Masters of Library Information Science from ALA accredited college or university

Schedule:

Starting Salary Range:

The Center for Jewish History seeks a Genealogy Specialist to assist patrons of the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute in person and remotely.


The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute stands out as a unique destination for those passionate about family history because of its openness, expertise, innovative programs, and access to archival collections. The Genealogy Institute has been connecting researchers with their history and heritage for over 15 years at the Center for Jewish History, which provides a collaborative home for five partner organizations: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. The partners’ archives, which researchers access in the Lillian Goldman Reading Room adjacent to the Genealogy Institute, comprise the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel. The successful applicant will join a dynamic team of forward-thinking and professionally engaged Center librarians.


Reporting to the Senior Manager for Public Services and working closely with the Senior Genealogy Librarian, the Genealogy Specialist will oversee and cooperate with genealogy volunteers to instruct researchers in the use of online genealogy databases, as well as direct researchers to resources located in the collections of the onsite partner organizations at the Center for Jewish History. The Genealogy Specialist will undertake special projects related to genealogy in order to advance institutional and departmental goals and increase public and donor engagement with the Genealogy Institute.


As needed, the Genealogy Specialist will provide online classes and workshops, social media tutorials, and guidance to patrons concerning research at the Genealogy Institute.


The Genealogy Specialist will provide assistance with database research and document-based queries for participants in the DNA Reunion Project at the Center for Jewish History.


This is a full-time position requiring 4 days per week onsite, with a work-from-home option on Fridays.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Responding to genealogy inquiries via in-person interviews, phone, email, and Zoom.
• Facilitating genealogy group workshops.
• Creating genealogy-related social media content.
• Training and supervision of genealogy volunteers and interns.
• Updating and expanding genealogy-related research guides.
• Helping patrons and troubleshooting usage of Genealogy Institute technologies, such as microfilm readers, public computers, and printers.
• Participating in special projects, including the creation of family history portfolios for donors or potential donors.
• Coordinating community outreach opportunities.


Required Qualifications:

• Deep knowledge of genealogy research and resources, with an emphasis on Jewish genealogy.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative setting.


Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
• Knowledge of Hebrew, Yiddish, and/or Russian.

THE ROLE

The Recording & Archive (R&A) Department is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of StoryCorps’ recording process and assuring the integrity and accessibility of StoryCorps’ archive of over 83,000 born-digital signature audio interviews and over 240,000 interviews recorded using the StoryCorps App. 

The Archivist is a critical member of the R&A department. As the Archivist, you will support the development, planning, and implementation of in-person and remote archive training sessions. You will oversee the transfer and review of interview materials and delivery of these materials to local, regional, and national archive partners. You will also provide individual feedback and support to facilitators and other staff regarding interview paperwork, metadata collection, and audio and photo file transfer. As the Archivist, you will take a role in serving as a key partner to the Digital Innovation team and the Public Information team to support the technological development of StoryCorps recording platforms.

This position is designated as a union position. As such, it is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in our Collective Bargaining Agreement with CWA Local 1180. This also means that you would be responsible for paying union dues or agency fees (currently 1.3% of your gross wages), deducted from your regular biweekly pay after the completion of your qualifying period.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Support StoryCorps’ mission by serving in a central role in various organization-wide planning committees and interdepartmental teams related to accessibility, initiatives, or others. 
  • Manage the lifecycle of StoryCorps’ interview materials, including file transfer procedures and improvements, processing, reporting, and dissemination of audio and photo files, interview records, interview metadata, and other related information. 
  • Create archive and database-specific materials and play a leadership role in the training of internal staff and external archive users on archival processes.
  • Support field staff facilitators on archival and recording work through regular written reports that provide essential feedback on file naming conventions, data entry, audio and photographic standards, physical and digital paperwork processing and ensure all internal stakeholders are informed of changes in workflow. 
  • Evaluate and examine processing and delivery workflows and refine them as technological advancements are implemented.
  • Refine and update metadata field and participant response options for physical and digital paperwork forms and oversee the creation of new forms as needed using CSS coding language.
  • Monitor areas for improved functionality in the Archive through usage and communication with stakeholders, including advanced search options, metadata standardization, and the creation of StoryCorps interview Collections capability. Suggest best practices and improvement plans as well as assisting with testing and implementation.
  • Promote the StoryCorps Archive through internal and external events,  conference presentations, and more. 
  • Provide interview and supplementary materials to new and continuing community partners, including the Library of Congress. Develop and implement workflows for internal and external requests for interview materials.
  • Perform other duties to support Recording & Archive department/function as assigned.


 

ABOUT YOU

Required:

  • You are familiar with digital audio recording and photography techniques.
  • You have advanced skills in Excel, and experience in WordPress, SQL, and Python.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Travel Percentage: 5%
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items
  • This position requires that the individual is able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. and can maneuver large, cumbersome equipment.

The Graduate School of Library & Information Studies (GSLIS) at Queens College, CUNY, has a position for a Lecturer. The GSLIS is the only publicly supported American Library Association accredited school of library and information studies in the metropolitan New York City area. The GSLIS has a large and highly diverse student body.

Primary responsibilities will include teaching classes in information studies, overseeing student recruitment and admissions to the GSLIS degree and certificate programs, advising students on their program of study, and overseeing degree completion. The appointee will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The successful candidate will have experience of information work in the New York City area, with a good working knowledge of the library systems, professional associations and the needs of the profession. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the diversification of the field, social justice and equity.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, which may include evenings and weekends, the successful candidates are expected to assist the needs of the Department in the areas of administration, student advisement, etc. The College expects faculty participation in its diverse activities and a commitment to render service to the College and the profession as well. · Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

COMPENSATION

COMPENSATION Salary Range: $77,517 - $82,102
