Middletown Thrall Library in anticipation of a vacancy to occur in January 2021, is seeking applicants for the position of Librarian III – Head of Reference.  


REQUIRED: Graduation from an American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) or Master of Science in Information Science (M.S.I.S.) program, a New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate, and at least four years post graduate experience in professional librarianship. 


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: LIBRARIAN III: Under the general supervision of the Library Director, an incumbent of this class performs professional library work and has overall responsibility for major functional areas of a library, which might include Technical Services, Reference, Collection Development or Children's Services. Dependent upon assignment, this position may also function as the head of a small branch library. The Librarian III has responsibility for coordination, administration and policy implementation for the assigned area to insure efficient operation. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate professional, paraprofessional, clerical and volunteer personnel.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Library Director: management and oversight responsibility for all adult population library services (excluding programming).  Specific responsibilities include: Scheduling of all reference and technical services staff, collection development supervision for all electronic and hard copy reference, fiction, and non-fiction materials, policy evaluation and implementation, maintenance of the Library’s web site and database subscriptions, ordering materials, training and supervision of our Reference and Technical Processing staff, service assessment, future planning, along with other responsibilities to be assigned on an as needed basis. 


IDEAL CANDIDATES: Will possess previous supervisory and administrative experience in the field, top notch time management, and project management skills, delegation skills, extensive experience working with computers and technology including Automated Library System modules for reference, acquisitions and patron interfaces, and be comfortable managing and facilitating change in a fast paced environment.   Experience working with Sirsi-Dynix Symphony and Spanish language fluency a plus.  Ideal candidates will also exhibit a positive, “can do” attitude, a collegial good nature, careful listening skills, grace under pressure, and the ability to understand issues from the user’s perspective. 


SPECIAL NOTE:  Permanent appointment to the position is contingent upon the applicant’s placement and score on the Orange County Civil Service list for Librarian III. 


SCHEDULE: Applicants must be available to work a 35 hour per week schedule to include rotating evening 

and weekend shifts.   


MINIMUM STARTING SALARY: $80,000 or higher based upon experience. Yearly paid holidays (13 days) and personal time (3 days).  Generous vacation, and sick time accrual per union contract timetable.   Family or individual health insurance coverage provided through NYSHIP’s Empire Plan. Family or individual vision and dental benefits provided. Participation in the New York State Retirement System and 403B retirement savings plan option.
