A part-time (4-days-a-week) temporary position for a Reference and
Research Archivist is available to begin September 2019. The incumbent
will work as a member of a cross-institutional team on the development
of a strategic plan for the Museum’s renowned collection of American art
that is being supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. The
position is for 2 years, eligible for health insurance and paid time
off.
Reporting
directly to the Benjamin and Irma Weiss Director of Research Resources,
the Reference and Research Archivist will provide access and reference
to permanent collections data, archival documentation, visual resources,
and other primary and secondary resources relating to the Whitney’s
permanent collection and exhibitions. Working closely with Research
Resources, Curatorial, and Registration staff, the role of this position
will be to provide research reference, to analyze and synthesize
information across the Whitney’s permanent collection, archive, and
library databases (TMS, ArchiveSpace, and Koha) and to facilitate the
discovery of collections content, data, and information.
Responsibilities
Carrying
out collections information reference, retrieval, and research;
generating reports on completed research; and developing metrics,
guides, and other data-generating and reporting tools, processing
archival material to facilitate access, and to schedule and arrange
appointments for access to archival records and permanent collection
documentation as well as processing of archival material to enable
access.
Job Requirements
2-3
years of experience working in an archival setting relating to the arts
or a museum. Knowledge of archival reference and research, archival
processing and description, and modern and contemporary art history, as
well as an understanding of library, archives, and museum content and
metadata standards. An MLIS in Library or Information Sciences or a
related degree with equivalent experience is required
