Part of the Queens College Libraries and located in the Aaron Copland School of Music, the Queens College Music Library has evolved into a first-class research facility and is the largest music collection in the CUNY system. The Music Library is located on two levels in the School of Music building and contains over 35,000 scores, 30,000 books and 20,000 sound recordings. The reference collection, including complete works of composers and monuments of music, is one of the best in the New York City area.
This is a temporary part-time position (approximately 15 hours a week from November 2018 through June 2019). Reporting to the Associate Professor/Head of the Music Library, the successful candidate will perform the following duties:
  • Provide reference services as needed;
  • Assist students with research and information questions and work with faculty as needed to provide student assistance with course-related research
  • Serve as the liaison between the Music Library and the Benjamin Rosenthal Library, the Aaron Copland School of Music, and other departments as needed;
  • Manage the content of the Music Library webpages and the Music Resources page (https://qc-cuny.libguides.com/music);
  • Work with Acquisitions librarian to place orders for faculty and patron requested materials
  • Assist Music Library staff with the planning, installation and promotion of an exhibit for the 2019-20 academic year; and
  • Assist with public services, outreach, donations, music cataloging, and the Music Library book sale as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library Science and/or Music
  • Formal education in or working knowledge of classical music, including ability to read music (appropriate experience may be consider in lieu of education)
  • Public service experience in a library
  • Advanced computer skills and familiarity with standard office software programs (such as Microsoft Office) and, preferably, music notation software (such as Finale and/or Sibelius). Familiarity with an Integrated Library Systems program a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively independently as well as maintain a positive working relationship within the Music Library team
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
COMPENSATION
Hourly rate - $42.95/hour
** This is a temporary position in the Music Library with an anticipated start date of November 2018.
