Tech Svcs/Ref Librarian, LIM College (NY)

LIM College - Where Business Meets Fashion is currently seeking candidates for the position of Technical Services/Reference Librarian.


Founded in 1939, LIM College educates students for success in the global business of fashion and its many related industries. The Technical Services / Reference Librarian, manages all aspects of technical services including cataloging all library materials (including electronic records); processing collection; configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting library software, webpage, databases, social media, circulation reports and instant messaging; maintaining databases' statistical data; training staff and work-study students on technical services procedures; maintaining automated patron notices. Also, answers library reference questions, instructs classes for student and faculty on research and use of the library. Performs and overseas specific projects and programs as assigned. Participates on college-wide committees as appointed; attends open-house events and provides college service as directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Assumes responsibility for the effective performance of library technical functions.
  • Implementing, coordinating and overseeing cataloging in all formats, including monographs, serials and electronic resources.
  • Catalogs electronic records. In particular, familiarity with OCLC-MARC coding guidelines regarding electronic reproductions, items published originally or only in online format and Provider Neutral records is expected.
  • Providing original and copy cataloging for specialized materials, including ephemera and rare books.
  • Overseeing enhancing, upgrading and editing of existing MARC records using AACR2, LC Classification, LCSH, MARC21 format, Marcive WebSelect, OCLC, Library of Congress and the library's automated system.
  • Supervising system maintenance of the Library ILS system (SIRSI Unicorn Workflows), including report production and upgrades to the system, general troubleshooting, and revisions of maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Maintaining consistency and supports accuracy in records kept, regardless of format.
  • Acting as liaison between IT department, ILS vendors and the library, keeping the Director, Assistant Director, and other library staff updated regarding progress.
  • Providing ILS software support and instruction to library staff including but not limited to drafting/editing existing instructional materials for all levels of staff.
  • Serving as expert user for all SIRSI Unicorn Workflow modules, maintaining operational service for Workflow and implementing changes in patron profiles, duration of material borrowed, etc.
  • Preparing cataloging budget (Connexion hours estimate, authority records needs, supplies, etc.) for Directors' approval.
  • Keeping abreast of trends in cataloging and automation through active participation in local and national conferences and relevant list-servs.
  • Providing staff with regular updates on events and issues that may impact the library as a whole.
Assumes some responsibility for the effective performance of library reference functions as needed in evenings.
  • Providing library research assistance to students with print and online resources by teaching the use of these tools, as required.
  • Assisting in development and teaching of research and analysis classes and library orientations and tours.
  • Providing reference services, bibliographic instruction, and staff training.
  • Participating in scholarly research, in the areas of interest as approved by Director.
  • Serving on library and college committees, specifically those that impact technically-related areas.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Assumes responsibility for preparing and maintaining assigned records and reports.
  • Working with Director and Assistant Director to oversee student projects, providing input into acquisitions decisions, and proposes long-term strategies for the growth and maintenance of the library in general.
  • Preparing, as needed, quarterly and semester usage reports using statistics gleaned from both the ILS system and electronic resources.
Assumes responsibility for maintaining effective business relations with customers and external contacts.
  • Resolving customer requests, complaints, and problems or refers them appropriately.
  • Promoting goodwill and conveys a positive image of the college.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with area staff and with management.
  • Keeping Director and Assistant Director informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
  • Performing special operations and manages special projects as assigned.
  • Ensuring that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.


REQUIREMENTS: The person selected will have the following qualifications:

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in the field of Library Science
  • Thorough knowledge of cataloging and some knowledge of reference instruction
  • At least one (1) year working in an academic library
  • Ability to teach bibliographic instruction & information literacy courses
  • Able to perform cataloging using OCLC records
