LOCUST VALLEY LIBRARY

Director

Scope of Work

This position involves responsibility for all day to day library functions within the framework of the library’s goals and objectives, policies and budget. The work involves carrying out broad policy as determined by the Library Board of Trustees and recommending needed policies. A maximum degree of latitude for independent action is exercised within the scope of library policy.

The Director reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

Duties and Responsibilities


Establish Priorities

 Recommends, plans and implements library services; recommends changes in services to keep current with needs and demands of the community;

 Participates in long range and strategic planning;

 Seeks to improve library services and collections in a fiscally responsible way;

 Evaluates effectiveness of library services in relation to community needs;

 Plans efficient use of space and furnishings to accommodate patrons, services, staff and collections;

Policy Recommendations

 Submits recommendations on library policies and services to the Board of Trustees, implements policy decisions;

 Oversees the assembly of a monthly Board packet;

 Generates statistical reports on various functions and services of the Library;


Budget and Finances


 Prepares preliminary budget in consultation with the Budget committee and staff, reporting to the Library Trustees;

 Works with the Budget Committee to finalize a budget proposal;

 Directs and supervises expenditure of library funds;

 Applies for library construction aid;

 Encourages and facilitates grant application-writing by the staff;

 Oversees the preparation of financial reports;

 Oversees the filing of all required forms and reports for county, state, and federal governments;

 Oversees collection development, acquisitions, and weeding of the collections;

 Approves purchase of electronic databases and computers;

 Oversees the maintenance of a CRM (customer relationship management) system to track donors;

 Handles daily cash receipts.


Building Construction and Maintenance


 Supervises the maintenance of building and grounds, including tennis courts;

 Recommends repairs, alterations and new construction;

 Obtains quotes for construction and maintenance projects as per the library’s procurement policy.


Professional Awareness


 Maintains current knowledge of new developments in the library field, including technological advances;

 Attends professional meetings; keeps informed of professional developments.


Managing, Development and Utilization of Staff


 Evaluates staffing requirements in context of continuing and new services, special projects, and individual employee skills;

 Evaluates staff performance; recommends appointments, promotions and dismissals;

 Oversees compliance with all government regulations regarding employment;

 Conducts staff meetings and staff training;

 Prioritizes the safety of the staff;

 Maintains job descriptions for all positions; Responsible for hiring process;

 Surveys staff regarding job satisfaction annually;

 Supports staff members in professional development and recommends opportunities for additional education.


Community Relations and Communication


 Oversees the preparation of the newsletter and other correspondence for the community and media;

 Oversees the design of the library website and makes updates in WordPress;

 Resolves patron disputes/complaints that cannot be resolved by the staff;

 Produces an Annual Report to the community with graphics;

 Serves as liaison with the Friends of the Library, and the Historical Society;

 Represents the Library at community meetings;

 Maintains membership in community organizations.


Abilities, Skills & Knowledge


 Excellent knowledge of library techniques, materials, and administrative practices;

 Ability to recommend and carry out library policies;

 Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate library services;

 Ability to train and supervise library staff, plan and coordinate the work of others;

 Ability to troubleshoot technical equipment (copy machines, computers and printers);

 Ability to step into any staff position if needed;

 Good communication skills, imagination, creativity and talent for organization;

 Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;

 Initiative in making constructive suggestions for improvements in services, collections, facilities, administrative practices, and use of technology;

 Tact, courtesy and good judgment.


Education and Experience

An MLS from an ALA accredited university, and a minimum of four years’ experience managing library operations including supervisory experience.


Salary and Benefits

Salary range begins at $100,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Digital Preservation Librarian


Description

The New York University (NYU) Division of Libraries is currently accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty Digital Preservation Librarian within the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation & Conservation Department. The Digital Preservation Librarian will collaborate closely with colleagues in departments across the division to facilitate the preservation of NYU Libraries' digital collections, including born digital and digitized collections.


The inaugural incumbent will assess existing practices, and unify strategies and processes across the library. They will contribute to programs that support current work and look ahead to the evolving collection needs. Documenting and maintaining digital preservation policies, ensuring their ongoing relevance and dissemination, will be a continuing responsibility of the position.


The Digital Preservation Librarian will create opportunities to engage colleagues across NYU by sharing insights on digital preservation standards and issues. This includes leading communities of practice, developing informational resources, and conducting consultations with faculty, staff, and students. This role requires active participation in local and international groups dedicated to digital preservation, staying abreast of field developments, and representing NYU Libraries in membership organizations.


Faculty librarians pursue their own research, contributing their expertise, experiences, creative or artistic outputs, and investigations to build new knowledge and make cultural contributions. The person in this position has wide latitude in determining their own research agenda in their chosen areas.

Required:

  • Minimum one graduate degree (Master’s level or higher), conferred by start date, for consideration. A second graduate degree will be required to be eligible for tenure. One of the two eventual graduate degrees must be an ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or equivalent.

Salary/Benefits: 

This position is open rank with faculty status and includes an attractive benefits package, including five weeks of annual vacation. This is a hybrid position, 80-60% on site, 20-40% remote.

The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Full Curator in the academic year 2023-2024 is $102,500.


The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Associate Curator in the academic year 2023-2024 is $90,000.


The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Assistant Curator in the academic year 2023-2024 is $86,100.


The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Library Associate in the academic year 2023-2024 is $82,000.

Digital Projects Specialist

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research seeks a full-time digital projects specialist to join its Digital Lab. The Digital Lab ensures the long-term accessibility and preservation of YIVO library and archive materials. The Lab primarily works on digitization and post-digitization phases of archival projects, ingesting upwards of half a million digital objects into their DAMS each year. The Lab also supports digital projects across the entire organization.

Reporting to the Digital Lab Manager, the Digital Projects Specialist works on all digitization and ingest phases of projects. This is an on-site position.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Digital capture of library and archival materials according to current digital preservation standards.
  • Perform postproduction on digital objects, including adding metadata and filenames
  • Perform quality assurance on digitized materials
  • Ingest digitized materials into DAMS system
  • Track and report digitization progress on shared Google spreadsheets
  • Keep current with trends and developments in the field of digital preservation.
  • Basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting

Qualifications & Experience:

  • MLIS or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience digitizing paper materials for preservation
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Knowledge and understanding of digital image file parameters, including bit depth, color profiles, resolution, compression, image size, and formats
  • Ability to learn new technical skills in the context of digital preservation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

— Interest in the history and culture of East European Jewry
— Language proficiency in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, and/or Polish
— Previous experience working in library or archives settings

The City University of New York (CUNY) Office of Library Services (OLS) is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of University Archivist. As the nation's largest urban university, CUNY is dedicated to providing quality education to over 243,000 students across 25 NYC campuses. This is a unique opportunity to lead the 'Cultivating Archives and Institutional Memory at “The People’s University”: A CUNY Archival Development Initiative, a three-year Mellon Public Knowledge grant project aimed at preserving and sharing the rich history of CUNY.

With active support from the University Dean of Libraries and the Director of Collections Strategy in OLS, as well as a project advisory board comprised of dynamic archivists across the university system, the University Archivist will focus on the following key responsibilities:

Leadership and Advocacy:

  • Guide the implementation of the Archival Development Project, including assessing deliverables of a $2M Mellon Public Knowledge grant.
  • Hire and supervise 2 full-time archivists (Outreach and Digital Archivists) to shape the strategy for archives across the university.
  • Foster cultural change in support of archives across CUNY, establishing the technical and social infrastructure for a robust and fluid network of campus archives.
  • Lead the OLS Archives Advisory Committee
  • Foster a strong connection between Records Management and Archives at CUNY system-wide
  • Collaborate with New York State Archives and other key stakeholders.

Other Duties

Development and Oversight of Central Office Archives:

  • Establish a Central CUNY archives accessible to internal clients and external researchers.
  • Work with colleagues to complete the assessment and disposition of system records held in suboptimal storage and facilitate the transfer of Central Office archives material to a new space.
  • Develop a plan for providing research access to historically significant records.
  • Oversee the survey and inventory of central office records stored in campus archives, guiding decisions for their disposition.

Support and Coordination of Existing Campus Archives:

  • Provide leadership, support, and coordination for archives on CUNY’s 25 campuses, 31 libraries, and research centers.
  • Develop university-wide policies and workflows for archives and digital preservation.
  • Guide the implementation of a digital archival infrastructure across CUNY.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library, archival, or information science with successful completion of graduate coursework in archives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience overseeing development and preservation of archival collections.
  • Understanding of core principles of archival management.
  • Experience with project management within diverse, asynchronous teams and within large public institutions.
  • Familiarity with digital archiving tools and born-digital materials.
  • Experience developing innovative outreach and engagement strategies for public archives
  • Proficiency in archival management systems such as ArchivesSpace.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and strategic leadership.

P/T - Library & Archives Asst, The Whitney (NY)

With the initiation of a new site for the Whitney’s longstanding Independent Study Program, ISP and Research Resources have identified a need for dedicated research tools to support curatorial studies, critical studies, and art practice participants and their work. We seek a Library and Archives Assistant to work with ISP research collections, across primary and secondary resource holdings.

We aim to establish an onsite branch library for ISP use. The ISP Library and Archives Assistant will work with department staff to develop practicable and sustainable procedures for all aspects of that branch’s operation, including its collection development, cataloging, circulation, and storage. This is a part-time, temporary position and the incumbent is expected to work 21 hours per week.

Expected projects/work assignments:

  • In collaboration with staff, formulate and execute collection development and circulation policies for a new branch library.
  • Assist staff with library collection development.
  • ­Create original and copy cataloging in MARC for library materials.
  • Assist with reference inquiries from staff and external researchers.
  • Inventory newly-accessioned archival records.

 

Skills and qualifications required (including technology skills):

  • MLIS or related degree, with experience in art sources and services.
  • Experience with library cataloging (MARC, RDA, LCSH, LC classification).
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail.
  • Experience with an ILS.
  • Experience with spreadsheet software, including Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
  • Ability to lift cartons up to 30lbs is helpful.

F/T - Project Archivist, Ctr for Puerto Rican Studies-CUNY (NY)

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College (CENTRO) is hiring a Project Archivist. Primary assignment would be to process the recently acquired Ibrahim González collection, including creation of a detailed inventory, arrangement and description of material, implementation of preservation protocols as needed, producing a detailed finding aid, and collaborating on promotion and outreach of the collection. González was a radio personality, musician, photographer, writer, and teacher prominent in the New York City Latine music scene, as well as an active member of the Hispanic Islam community in Harlem and the Bronx.

Work assignments may vary depending upon library and archival project needs. The Project Archivist reports to the Archival Collections Manager and may oversee the work of college assistants for specific aspects of the project.

Responsibilities:

The Project Archivist is responsible for the arrangement and description of personal papers in Centro Archives holdings. Responsibilities include:

  • Implementing “More Product, Less Process” collection processing
  • Appraisal and description of materials
  • Weeding and inventorying of the collection
  • Writing, researching and editing a finding aid, reports, and web content.
  • Supervising and training work-study students for this project
  • Working collaboratively with staff in a team environment to promote the collection

Qualifications:

  • Masters in Library and Information Science, or equivalent degree, with a specialization in archival management.
  • Demonstrated professional experience processing archival collections.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of arrangement and description, and familiarity with archival standards, specifically DACS.
  • Ability to recognize archival preservation issues and apply basic preservation techniques.
  • Knowledge of the history of Latino and/or Puerto Rican populations and communities in the US is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of both English and Spanish languages.
  • Knowledge of Arabic and/or Islam a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills; attention to accuracy and detail is essential.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Lloyd Sealy Library at John Jay College invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor. The appointment is subject to annual reappointments until tenure is earned. We are seeking an Electronic Resources Librarian to manage the full lifecycle of our electronic resources collections, including databases, ebooks, eserials, and streaming media. They will coordinate all activities related to acquiring and providing access to electronic resources, including troubleshooting, communicating with consortia and vendors, collecting data/statistics used in the analysis and evaluation of electronic resources, receiving and submitting invoices and setting up trials.

The Electronic Resources Librarian will work across technical and public-facing areas of library services and participate in the Library’s reference and instruction program. They will be involved in shared decision-making in various committees across the Library department, John Jay College, and CUNY.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the full lifecycle of the library’s continuing and perpetual electronic resources, including databases, e-books and e-journals and streaming media. This includes acquiring and renewing subscriptions, providing ongoing access and support and tracking usage.

  • Maintain the library’s electronic resources in the library’s Ex Libris’s Alma/PrimoVE system, on the A -Z database list on the library's website, and on the Springshare LIbguides platform. Troubleshoot technical issues with electronic resources: coordinate the resolution of problems with vendors, library and information technology personnel, and other contacts as appropriate, and communicate directly with patrons and reference librarians on technical issues.

  • Work with vendors, publishers, consortia, the library budget committee and the University procurement office to proactively address ordering, access, payment and performance issues.

  • Promote awareness and use of electronic resources through blog posts, workshops, database trials and other forms of outreach, and by providing training, and arranging for vendor/publisher presentations for library liaisons.

  • Collect and analyze usage statistics and cost information for annual surveys and for use in electronic resources collection assessment.

  • Develop and maintain workflows, policies, procedures, and other types of documentation pertaining to electronic resources.

  • Pursue an active research agenda.

  • Actively participate on university wide electronic resources management and advisory committees.

  • Provide excellent customer service in support of our community of students and faculty colleagues.

  • Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Work well with others, including collaborating with other library faculty and staff to implement cross-functional initiatives.

  • Participate in the Library’s reference and instruction activities, including staffing in-person and chat reference and teaching one-shot information literacy classes and workshops, including occasional weekend and/or evening hours if required.

QUALIFICATIONS

For the rank of instructor, a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. The candidate will be required to complete a second graduate degree within 5 years. For a degree at CUNY, tuition benefits are available (6 credits per fall/spring semester). Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For the rank of Assistant Professor, a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution, with a second graduate degree required. Also expected is the potential for scholarly productivity and the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with an integrated library system such as Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo VE library systems,

  • Experience working with electronic resources tools such as OpenURL resolvers, EZproxy, config files, and knowledge bases

  • Basic knowledge of metadata standards/metadata creation

  • Candidates are expected to have a genuine interest in contemporary information discovery & organization, strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills, effective oral and written communication skills, the ability to pay attention to detail & accuracy, and to establish and to coordinate complicated workflows. They will be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment, with the ability to work effectively with a variety of people in a diverse multicultural environment.

  • Experience working in an academic or research library is preferred, along with a genuine interest in criminal justice and/or justice broadly defined.
