Data Analyst - Content Indexing, Bloomberg (NJ)

Bloomberg runs on data, and our Global Data team acquires and supplies it to our clients. Teams work to collect, analyze, process and publish the data which is the backbone of our iconic Bloomberg Terminal -- the data which ultimately moves the financial markets! We’re responsible for delivering this data, news and analytics through innovative technology - quickly and accurately.

As a member of our News Indexing team based in Princeton, NJ, you will be responsible for automated classification of the world's most important financial and economic news with the aim of further entrenching Bloomberg as the leader in the financial news market. We use proprietary and open-source software to automatically retrieve, parse, organize and tag news from social media sites, news feeds, web sites and other sources that run on the Bloomberg Professional Service. We also build and maintain our complex taxonomy of classification tags according to our clients’ needs. Our work is not theoretical or hyper-specific – it is practical and impactful.

We’ll trust you to:

  • Use specialized software in order to create hierarchical rules that automatically classify Bloomberg and third-party news, as well as data from social media sites. You need to have a keen interest in news and perform research in order to identify news topics and modify or create news classification rules accordingly.
  • Identify accurate and reliable news sources and act as subject matter expert for the news product.
  • Identify opportunities to create efficiency in our processes and execute on your ideas.
  • Collaborate with our partners in Product Strategy, Sales, Analytics and Engineering to understand our clients’ needs and build a market-leading news product. In addition, you will also partner with our Sales and Analytics groups to promote our news product and ensure strong customer uptake.
  • Develop cutting-edge processes focused on natural language processing, data science, machine learning, and text analysis as we build the next generation of Bloomberg’s proprietary news classification products.

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in disciplines such as Library Science, Linguistics, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Business, Finance, or other computer-related specialization
  • Strong interest/ knowledge in financial and economic news
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven understanding of customer service and experience in building strong relationships with stakeholders
  • 1 - 3 years of professional project management experience in information management with the ability to deliver on tight deadlines
  • Working knowledge of a programming or query language and experience of using it for a data analysis/data science project (e.g. R, Python, JavaScript, SQL, etc.)
  • Work legally in the US without visa sponsorship now or in the future

F/T - Web Svcs & User Experience Lib, Columbia U (NY)

Columbia University Libraries (CUL) seeks a Web Services and User Experience Librarian to collaboratively coordinate and participate in planning and implementing ongoing user-focused improvements to the Columbia Libraries’ online presence in support of academic research and resource discovery.

As part of the Web Services Team within the Digital Library and Scholarly Technologies (DLST) group, the incumbent will report to the Head of Web Services and will work with the Web Services team and with the Libraries’ Research & Learning group, Special Collections teams, and other Libraries and University staff to support existing web projects, to plan for and implement new online projects and new designs, and to improve the Libraries’ web presence. The Web Services User Experience Librarian will bring an innovative, user-centered approach to all online projects and will thrive in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Working collaboratively, this full-time librarian position will participate in project review, analysis, development, and assessment. The incumbent will also work collaboratively to help address “legacy” web content, developing tooling and strategies to assist in managing that content. Under the guidance of the Head of Web Services, the incumbent will help improve workflows and procedures related to web projects and mobile strategies, participate in web project planning, provide documentation and training support for the Libraries’ content management systems, assist in developing user assessments and usability studies, analyze usage statistics and usability results, and provide reports and other information as needed to help with planning across our web presence.

The Web Services and User Experience Librarian assists in advising and consulting with other units within Columbia University Libraries related to the Libraries’ web presence and will communicate with content contributors and the Libraries as a whole about usability findings, best practices, accessibility needs and standards, and emerging technologies as well as industry standards. This position will participate in secondary assignments based on interests and institutional need.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create user documentation; provide training support for users of the Libraries’ web content management systems; provide direct assistance and consulting to content contributors for Web-related activities and when help is needed with creating, maintaining, or troubleshooting their web contributions; and help maintain user accounts.
  • Enable and ensure the smooth operation and successful implementation of online projects within a highly collaborative environment.
  • Collaborate with Web Services, the Web Content Editor, and the Communications Team to maintain and promote the Libraries’ web style guide and branding guidelines and other web contributor guidelines as needed.
  • Provide statistics and other information to help with assessment and planning; in collaboration with the Head of Web Services, advise and consult on areas related to web usability, develop and conduct usability studies, analyze results, communicate findings, and implement improvements.
  • Work with the Web Services Team to communicate with contributors and the Libraries as a whole about assessment findings, best practices, accessibility needs and standards, and emerging technologies as well as industry standards (and how these should/might be integrated into the current Libraries Web platforms and presence). 
  • Promote staff awareness of the Libraries web presence and of issues and technologies related to library initiatives and services; monitor, identify, and consider innovations in the uses of technology for the delivery of resources, services, and information; and participate in project review, analysis, development, planning, and assessment, working as a team member with Libraries staff, University partners, and external vendors.
  • Collaborate with appropriate Libraries staff on "legacy" web content, and develop tooling and strategies to assist this effort.

The Thomas Yoseloff Business Center provides patrons access to electronic resources including Bloomberg Terminals, comprehensive print materials, and in-person programs, classes, 1-on-1 sessions, and offerings in the fields of personal finance and investing, small business resources, business and financial research, and career services.

The Yoseloff Business Center seeks a collaborative, engaged outreach librarian to work with a wide-range of community organizations and government agencies to provide unique programs and services to a diverse body of library users including business owners, investors, or students in support of business research and entrepreneurial projects, as well as managing finances and investing.


Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Assistant Manager for Public Service:
  • Provides a full complement of reference desk and front-line service in all subject areas represented by the business library, in person and through vIrtual consultations
  • Assists the Assistant Manager in the development, coordination, oversight, promotion, assessment, and reporting on programming,services, and instruction activities.
  • Collaborates with nonprofit organizations and government agencies to offer high-impact quality programs and services in the areas of business and finance

Librarian for STEM Instr & Engagement, NYU (NY)

The Librarian for STEM Instruction & Engagement will lead the NYU Bern Dibner Library instruction and engagement programs. Primarily serving students and faculty of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, this position is central to our efforts to create and sustain vibrant, inclusive, and STEM-relevant programs for the Tandon community, including teaching across the undergraduate and graduate populations and working in partnership with other academic and support services, like Student Affairs, the Tandon Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program, and more. In concert with the Libraries’ Instructional Services department, STEM librarians, and teaching partners in Data Services and Research Computing, this position strives to surface key concepts in the use and understanding of our information landscape, emphasizing critical examinations of issues such as openness, access, emerging technologies, and other scholarly practices.  

In pursuit of building the responsive and forward-looking instructional programs, the ideal candidate brings skills and enthusiasm for engaging directly with students and faculty to understand the evolving landscape of needs in STEM education. Additionally, this candidate  develops and engages with innovative pedagogical approaches and outcomes and reveals connections between formal, co-curricular, and lifelong learning so important to learners in STEM fields. This position strives to create scaled instructional capacity, work with larger instructional programs emanating from the Undergraduate & Instructional Services department, and shape partner teaching engagements with Data Services, Research Computing, and STEM librarians across NYU Libraries.

Faculty Librarians also explore their own active research agenda, contributing their expertise, experiences, and investigations to build new knowledge in their chosen areas. The STEM Instruction and Engagement Librarian will be well positioned to make substantive contributions to research in a number of areas including, but not limited to, explorations of the role that libraries play in creating necessary technological conditions that enable equitable access to online information; the collaborative establishment of non-commercial online resources and practices; the role libraries play in the open-access ecosystem; the consideration of biases within the terminology, architecture, and encoding of these systems, and the ethical and privacy considerations that arise in an era of mass data collection.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit is seeking a bright, innovative digital solutions engineer to join the tech services team as the Digital Strategies Librarian in Manhattan, NY. ABOUT THE SECOND CIRCUIT LIBRARY: The Second Circuit Library provides research services to over 200 circuit, district, magistrate, and bankruptcy judges, over 2,000 court staff, and also serves lawyers, self-represented litigants, and the general public. The Library currently employs 27 staff members circuit-wide and maintains six staffed branch libraries in New York, Connecticut, and Vermont. There are seven library locations throughout the circuit. There are 17,475 titles in the full library collection, and a wide variety of legal and non-legal electronic resources. The Library uses a mix of proprietary and open-source systems, including Sirsidynix Symphony, Vufind, CollectiveAccess, and WordPress.


POSITION OVERVIEW: The Digital Strategies Librarian will be stationed at the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in Manhattan, NY. Typical job duties may include, but are not limited to, the tasks listed below. Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs.


Assist in the creation of digital collections by identifying digitization projects, creating and uploading digital objects, and managing metadata.

Participate in the design, creation, and maintenance of websites and other digital applications.

Work with library colleagues, diverse patron groups, and other stakeholders to develop strategies for improving the discoverability of, and engagement with, library resources and special collections.

Assist in the production of multimedia projects, including videos and interactive exhibits.

Catalog and classify print and digital materials; maintain online catalog.

Assist with acquisitions-related tasks as needed.

Attend occasional special events outside of regular business hours.

The Digital Strategies Librarian will report to the Head of Tech Services Librarian.

 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.

Minimum of one year of experience in library technical services or archives; prior experience with digital collections or archives development a plus.

Knowledge of the MARC cataloging format and/or other non-MARC metadata standards (e.g. Dublin Core).

Familiarity with platforms used to host digital collections or digital exhibits (e.g. CollectiveAccess, Omeka, ContentDM), and/or content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal).

Interest in video production or storytelling, or willingness to learn, a plus.

Willingness to learn new technologies, experience with web programming and design a plus.

Flexibility, self-motivation, and a strong interest in joining a collaborative work environment.

The UNICEF Archives’ goal is to take a systemic approach to preserving the organization’s institutional heritage. It aims to provide improved archival preservation of both physical and digital materials and creating platforms for access through developing viable archival descriptions as well as engaging modern access platforms that satisfy client research needs. The Archives also aims to engage technology solutions through making use of new digital preservation capabilities. How can you make a difference?

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Digital Archivist is expected to:

  • Provide technical guidance on the identification, selection and implementation of UNICEF’s AMS and TDR
  • Provide input during the elaboration of technical requirements and associated architecture for the implementation of an AMS and TDR solution
  • Participate in the digitization of physical records with long term value including their digital preservation and related metadata implementation protocols
  • Establish digital preservation standards for long-term use by the Archives
  • Ensure description of physical and digital archival records complies with international and in-house metadata standards
  • Oversee the implementation of the archives’ online access protocols including appropriate Web presence

    • Essential: At least two (2) years' experience working in records and archives management, with demonstrated experience in electronic records and archives management software
    • Experience in digital archives and metadata curation within an archives or related organization

    Desirable: Qualification in one or more aspects of digital preservation.

Technical Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Knowledge of digital preservation issues, strategies, and standards
  • Knowledge of digital archival standards such as OAIS and Trusted Digital Repositories
  • Knowledge of accessioning, arranging, and describing archival material
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international archival standards – ISAD(G)
  • Knowledge of Archives Management Systems such as AToM, ArchivesSpace, Axiell/Adlib, etc.
  • Experience with large scale digitization projects is a strong asset
  • Highly proficient with desktop applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and an ability to learn new IT systems
  • Experience in digital preservation, digital libraries, and/or digital repositories
  • Knowledge of digital preservation tools such as ArchiveIT, Archivematica, Preservica, etc.   
  • Hands-on experience in using digital preservation systems in an enterprise-scale environment
  • Familiarity with web archiving tools and methods
  • Experience working with digital asset management software applications
  • Understanding of the application of emulation technologies for digital preservation strategies
  • Familiarity with mark-up languages, style sheets, and other XML-related technologies, using a command line interface and scripting
  • Familiarity with large-scale storage systems

 Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Additional UN languages, such as Spanish or French, will be considered an asset.

P/T - Ref Librarian, East Meadows Lib (NY)

 

There is a part-time librarian position available in the East Meadow Public Library's Reference Department. Seeking enthusiastic self-starter with experience working at a busy reference desk. This part-time position will include nights and weekends as needed. This is non competitive so candidate will not be taken off list

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provides reader's advisory and reference assistance
  • Provides technology assistance to patrons as needed
  • Assists with collection development
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • MLS from an accredited program
  • Strong commitment to excellent customer service
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of Sierra, Eventkeeper and Office a plus

STARTING SALARY 

$26-27 per hour. The library is a member of the NYS Retirement System
