Digital Asset Manager, Gagosian (NY)

 Digital Asset Manager


Gagosian seeks a Digital Asset Manager to establish, implement, and support our digital asset management system (DAMS).

The Digital Asset Manager will develop and support sustainable practices and infrastructure around the digital asset’s lifecycle to ensure the availability and integrity of assets related to the Gallery and its history, collections, and programs while establishing consistent standards, policies, and procedures regarding the same.

This position is key in realizing the roll-out, development, and use of the Gallery’s DAMS.

The manager will lead efforts in migrating and organizing existing media and corresponding metadata. They will create and establish content standards, policies, and procedures for streamlined workflows across the Gallery internationally.

Duties include but are not limited to

– Oversee day-to-day and long-term administration and use of DAMS, while working hands-on with assets, metadata, and users by directly contributing, organizing, describing, and disseminating assets.
– Spend significant time with archival material, photography, publications, technology, and communications departments to develop and support good, sustainable practices for the digital asset lifecycle to ensure the DAMS is used to its greatest potential.
– Own sustainable procedures for contributing, accessing, and using assets via the system; actively track trends in use and needs; and routinely measure outcomes of practices against objectives.
– Lead and develop user training, support, and advocacy efforts around the system and its contents while assisting users with all aspects of the system.
– Lend leadership and creativity in developing and supporting projects that use assets and data while planning and managing growth of the asset collection including conversion or/and digitization of archival, physical assets (for example: photographic prints, transparencies, slides, VHS, DVDs, etc.).
– Liaise with key stakeholders to affect successful integration and synchronization of the DAMS with other systems, applications, and repositories.
– Partners with the technology department and key stakeholders to plan system customizations, upgrades, integrations, testing, and maintenance; play a central role in vendor communications and management.
– Provide quality control for all metadata schema and standards to assure accuracy and consistency across the DAMS; this includes development/or selection and management of content standards including metadata tools, controlled vocabularies, and other metadata standardization solutions.

Qualifications (required)

– Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, or equivalent experience
– Experience working in digital librarianship and knowledge of current methods for archiving and preserving born-digital materials
– Certificate in Archives, or equivalent experience working in archives
– Three years or more recent related experience in an art museum, gallery, or similar institution
– Experience with DAMS development and implementation methodologies
– Expertise with user support, project management, digital asset lifecycles, and file conversions

Qualifications (recommended)

– Knowledge of modern and contemporary art practices
– Experience with Widen Collective

Skills and Abilities

– Proven ability and commitment to working collaboratively and managing others with excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Overview

Preservation and Collections Processing (PCP) is the department responsible for the acquisition, processing, cataloging, preservation, and physical management of the special collections holdings of NYPL’s three research libraries, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Library for the Performing Arts, and the Schomburg Center. 

 

The Collections Processing unit of PCP makes these resources discoverable via catalog records and collection guides and undertakes the physical preparation necessary to make these acquisitions available to the public. Special collections materials include archives, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, designs, maps, and non-commercial sound and moving image recordings.

Principal Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Special Collections Cataloging

  • Performs original cataloging of video recordings on cassette and in digital form in OCLC Connexion.
  • Creates inventory records in FileMaker Pro database.
  • Performs physical preparation of media including barcoding, labeling, and preservation rehousing.
  • Creates MARC records to full-level cataloging standards.
  • Adheres to RDA guidelines and the Library of Congress standards and other national cataloging guidelines for archival audio-visual cataloging, such as AACR2, AMIM, ARSC, DACS, and ISBD.
  • Searches for and applies name, subject, and uniform title authority access points and faceted form and genre, geographical and chronological headings in bibliographic records.
  • Records cataloging statistics as required.
  • Plans and executes this cataloging assignment, and contributes to the development of procedures, manuals, and reports.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education & Experience

ALA ­accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS, MLIS) and relevant professional work experience required to successfully perform the principal responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of RDA, AACR2, the Library of Congress Subject and Name Authority headings.
  • Familiarity with historical and emerging formats in audio-visual recording technologies.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends and issues in audio-visual cataloging.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of an online ILS cataloging module such as Sierra.
  • Familiarity with and interest in the performing arts, specifically dance or dance history.
  • Ability to apply critical judgment skills in cataloging responsibilities.
  • Flexibility in adapting to changeable cataloging needs.
  • Proficient experience using Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem solve, and prioritize cataloging tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: LIBRARIAN III: Under the general supervision of the Library Director, an incumbent of this class performs professional library work and has overall responsibility for major functional areas of a library, which might include Technical Services, Reference, Collection Development or Children's Services. Dependent upon assignment, this position may also function as the head of a small branch library. The Librarian III has responsibility for coordination, administration and policy implementation for the assigned area to insure efficient operation. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate professional, paraprofessional, clerical and volunteer personnel.

IDEAL CANDIDATES: Will possess previous supervisory and administrative experience in the field, top notch time management, and project management skills, delegation skills, extensive experience working with computers and technology including Automated Library System modules for reference, acquisitions and patron interfaces, and be comfortable managing and facilitating change in a fast paced environment.   Experience working with Sirsi-Dynix Symphony and Spanish language fluency a plus.  Ideal candidates will also exhibit a positive, “can do” attitude, a collegial good nature, careful listening skills, grace under pressure, and the ability to understand issues from the user’s perspective. 


SPECIAL NOTE:  Permanent appointment to the position is contingent upon the applicant’s placement and score on the Orange County Civil Service list for Librarian III.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical and Access Services Librarian supports student learning by managing the integrated library system, research databases and interlibrary loan system; overseeing the cataloging, physical processing and preservation of library materials; supervising the library’s Help Desk operations of circulation and course reserves; and overseeing shelving and stack maintenance.  The Librarian’s responsibilities include the hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of student workers. 


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform original and adaptive cataloging in MARC format following AACR2/RDA standards, add records to bibliographic database, and assign call numbers to new items.
  • Manage the components of the integrated library system, WorldShare Management Services.
  • Ensure the integrity of the library’s database of bibliographic records.
  • Train staff in using the integrated library system and set up library system user accounts and permissions.
  • Oversee the processes of circulation services and course reserves.
  • Administer ILL borrowing and lending transactions in compliance with copyright laws and manage upgrades of ILL applications.
  • Oversee the accessibility of research databases, e-serials and e-books with the WorldShare Knowledge Base and Collection Manager and maintain the A-Z e-resource list and OCLC link resolver.
  • Supervise student employees in circulation activities at the Help Desk and in shelving, shelf-reading and the physical processing of printed and audio-visual materials.
  • Serve as the liaison with IT to manage the library management system, to carry out system upgrades or migration planning and implementation, to upload patron records, and to update proxy server.
  • Submit service requests and problem reports to library system vendors and work with vendors to resolve issues.
  • Use reporting tools to generate reports for assessment and accreditation needs.
  • Conduct periodic inventory of library collections.
  • Establish, document and update procedures relating to the Librarian’s responsibilities.
  • Participate in reference desk coverage and library instruction as needed.
  • Assist with hosting library events and programming.
  • Engage in professional development to build new skill sets and increase proficiency at current skills.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 Education:

  • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science, or related advanced degree with significant library work experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years professional experience working in technical and/or access services in an academic or special library.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using WorldShare Management Services.
  • Experience supervising student workers.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with library management systems and MS Office Suite products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Library Director: management and oversight responsibility for all adult population library services (excluding programming).  Specific responsibilities include: Scheduling of all reference and technical services staff, collection development supervision for all electronic and hard copy reference, fiction, and non-fiction materials, policy evaluation and implementation, maintenance of the Library’s web site and database subscriptions, ordering materials, training and supervision of our Reference and Technical Processing staff, service assessment, future planning, along with other responsibilities to be assigned on an as needed basis. 


IDEAL CANDIDATES: Will possess previous supervisory and administrative experience in the field, top notch time management, and project management skills, delegation skills, extensive experience working with computers and technology including Automated Library System modules for reference, acquisitions and patron interfaces, and be comfortable managing and facilitating change in a fast paced environment.   Experience working with Sirsi-Dynix Symphony and Spanish language fluency a plus.  Ideal candidates will also exhibit a positive, “can do” attitude, a collegial good nature, careful listening skills, grace under pressure, and the ability to understand issues from the user’s perspective. 


SPECIAL NOTE:  Permanent appointment to the position is contingent upon the applicant’s placement and score on the Orange County Civil Service list for Librarian III.

 

SCHEDULE: Applicants must be available to work a 35 hour per week schedule to include rotating evening and weekend shifts.   


MINIMUM STARTING SALARY: $80,000 or higher based upon experience. Yearly paid holidays (13 days) and personal time (3 days).  Generous vacation, and sick time accrual per union contract timetable.   Family or individual health insurance coverage provided through NYSHIP’s Empire Plan. Family or individual vision and dental benefits provided. Participation in the New York State Retirement System and 403B retirement savings plan option.

 Part-time Adult and Reference Services Librarian I Opening

The Huntington Public Library seeks an enthusiastic and energetic individual to work with us in the Adult and Reference Services Department where there is a part-time opening for a Librarian I for 16 – 17.5 hours per week. The successful candidate should exhibit positive, proactive customer service skills, flexibility and initiative.

Duties and qualifications:

*      Basic knowledge of, and instruction to patrons, in all library resources including digital and downloadable materials

*      Possess knowledge of emerging technology and current trends in library services

*      Collection development, readers’ advisory and program responsibilities will be assigned as required

*      Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues as well as work independently

Requirements:

*      MLS from an ALA accredited institution

*      Valid NYS Public Librarian Certificate (this is not a trainee position)

*      General experience working with the public and diverse communities

*      Excellent communication skills

*      Positive, proactive customer service skills, along with flexibility and initiative

*      Spanish proficiency is a plus
