Library Profile
The Robert W. Van Houten Library, NJIT's university library, houses a core collection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business, humanities, and social sciences resources, and has an Information Commons computer lab with more than 100+ computer workstations and collaborative study spaces throughout the building. The Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture, Art and Design Library, a branch of the university library, maintains a core collection of architecture, art, and design resources. The Library has a staff of 24, who are committed to developing innovations in access and research services, information and digital literacies, and digital initiatives. The Library has an annual operating budget of $4.5 million and spends over 94% of the materials budget to acquire scholarly electronic resources for anytime, anywhere access. The collection comprises over 560,000+ volumes with 114 full-text databases, over 84,000+ electronic journals, 335,000+ ebooks, and 225,000+ physical holdings. The Library uses Ex Libris Alma and Primo Discovery, OCLC, ILLiad, RapidILL, and Digital Commons. Position Summary:
The Architecture, Art and Design (AAD) Librarian is responsible for the Littman Library during the closing shift and the Director’s absence. The Librarian will work closely with students, faculty, staff and other librarians to assist in digital projects and services, develop and promote educational materials and collections, and teach instructional sessions and programs. The Librarian will plan and implement workflows, including strategies to manage digital assets and advise students with best practices for preserving digital scholarship.
The AAD Librarian works primarily on-site, with minimal flex-work accommodations. A typical work schedule for the fall and spring semesters is Monday to Thursday from 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The work schedule for summer sessions and between semesters is Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. They will need to work occasional weekends for Open Houses or special events.

Essential Functions:

Digital Projects and Archives:

  • Manages the Digital Scholarship Lab and shares responsibility with the director and other librarians to maintain and develop the Image Database, Digital Archives of Newark Architecture, History of CoAD, and other projects.
  • Digitizes materials, coordinates and coordinates students assigned to work on digital projects, develops workflows and procedures, and performs quality control using established standards in applying and creating metadata.
  • Develops and maintains ResearchGuides and other online self-directed learning materials relating to digital scholarship, digital projects, and archives.
  • Works with the library staff to create and maintain the Littman Library’s web presence.
  • Maintains technical knowledge and skills through professional development, organizations and continued education.

Research and Instruction:

  • Provides reference and instructional services, including in-person, phone, email, and virtual reference, and tailored instructional sessions.
  • Participates in collection development.

General and Administrative:

  • Manages the Littman Library during the closing shift.
  • Shares responsibilities for training and supervising student assistants and processing library materials.
  • Coordinates the Littman Library work activities to align with the Van Houten Library’s policies, technologies and processes in fulfillment, resources management, etc.

Additional Functions:

  • Serves on the library and university committees and in the professional community.
  • Participates in planning, assessment, and other library initiatives.
  • Evaluates emerging technology trends and issues and their application in the academic library environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Master’s in Library Studies (MLS) degree.
  • Two (2) years of demonstrated experience with digital exhibition software (Omeka) and metadata standards (Dublin Core, MARC).
  • Two (2) years of professional experience with reference and instruction in an academic or similar library, including knowledge of print and electronic information resources.
  • Supervisory experience and the ability to delegate tasks and effectively manage workflows for student assistants and graduate assistants.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and independently to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, inclusion, and respect.
  • Aptitude for teaching and developing instructional content for both in-person and online instruction.
  • The formal education and experience prerequisites may be waived at the university’s discretion if the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience, specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • MA/MFA in architecture, visual arts or digital culture and working experience in a library, architecture or design firm.
  • Demonstrated experience with Adobe Suite, Drupal, and Canvas (or other learning management systems).
  • Knowledge of archival principles and experience with processing archival collections.
  • Copyright and intellectual property knowledge and project management experience are desirable.
  • Must have initiative, attention to detail, and remain flexible in a fast-paced, time-sensitive, multitasking environment with frequently changing priorities.
