F/T - Reader Svcs Librarian, The Morgan (NY)

Reader Services Librarian

(Full-time)

Responsibilities: 

The Morgan Library & Museum welcomes applications for a full-time Reader Services Librarian. This position enables access to the Morgan’s special and reference collections to foster learning and the exchange of ideas while maintaining the security and safety of the collections. The Reader Services Librarian is responsible for responding to library users’ needs during the day-to-day activities of the Sherman Fairchild Reading Room and facilitating in-depth consultation of the collections in person and remotely for researchers around the globe. This position reports to the Head of Reader Services and works closely and collaboratively with colleagues across the Library and Museum.

  • Evaluates readers’ requests to consult the collections, acting as a liaison between readers and curatorial staff; coordinates appointments and processes applications
  • Performs reference desk duties as required and monitors researchers on-site on proper handling of rare collections and reference materials
  • Retrieves and reshelves rare and reference materials from the vault and reference collection closed stacks; identifies materials for conservation treatment and routes as appropriate
  • Conducts in-depth research to provide detailed responses via e-mail and telephone to a range of reference inquiries
  • Instructs readers and staff with the use of the online catalog, finding aids, microfilm scanners, and other equipment; answers questions regarding requests for digital images and orders for photocopies; participate in shifting and other stacks maintenance tasks
  • Maintains statistical data related to the use of the collections and creates graphs, charts, and/or other visualizations of that data
  • Other duties as assigned by the department head

Qualifications: 

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library, archival or information studies or equivalent experience required; a strong background in the humanities (art history, history, or literature) with a focus on rare books and manuscripts preferred
  • 3–5 years of previous work experience in a special collections library reading room or other relevant experience desired
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to sustain close attention to detail; strong oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse library users and staff
  • Must possess excellent security awareness and judgment
  • Knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata schemas, and LCSH subject headings
  • Knowledge of national archival standards (i.e.: DACS, EAD, MPLP) desired
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems (i.e.: Voyager)
  • Experience working with The Museum System (TMS), desired
  • Familiarity with a major Western foreign language desired (i.e.: French, German, Italian, or Spanish); other languages, a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Ability to handle and move heavy books and boxes and wheel carts of books and other collection objects around campus (25–30 lbs.), extensive walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, climbing up stairs and narrow spaces; ability to work for extended periods on a computer, and tolerate moderate levels of dust and odor generated during normal collection management activities, movement of objects, and cleaning

Compensation: 

$56,000–$64,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits plan.

Position Summary

Develop instruction materials and lesson plans in both print and interactive web-based and multimedia formats, for both synchronous and asynchronous teaching modalities. Overall, this position provides instruction for undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of programs and disciplines. As a team member, the position shares responsibility for scheduling functions and activities conducted by the Instructional Services Team. The Instructional Services Team emphasizes the development of autonomous learners, facilitates lifelong learning, and promotes Core Curriculum learning outcomes, including Information Literacy and critical thinking. The Instructional Services Librarian also serves as a supporting member of the Mortola Library Research and Reference team, providing reference support to students, faculty, and staff both in-person and online. Responsibilities

Description

The Columbia University Libraries seeks a Collections Management Archivist for the Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Reporting to the Head of Collections Management of the RBML, the Archivist coordinates the intake and ongoing maintenance of all collections, regardless of format, for Columbia University’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The position works with Curators, the Director of the RBML, Shipping & Receiving staff, and collection donors to arrange the delivery of collections and accessions the materials, creating new cataloging records, assigning stack locations for materials, inspecting incoming materials for potential major conservation problems (mold, insect damage), and tracking accessions via acquisition forms, stack directory and collection management database. The Archivist contributes to planning, policy and procedure development and is expected to keep abreast of methods, guidelines and approaches for managing special collections materials.  

The incumbent also works with curators and archivists to identify and prepare materials for being transferred offsite to ReCAP, Columbia’s shared offsite storage facility, and liaises with ReCAP coordinator to schedule and arrange the transfers and troubleshoot problems as they arise. The Collection Management Archivist’s responsibilities also include hiring and training RBML student employees and assigning and supervising collection management student projects.

Other responsibilities include monitoring and ordering preservation supplies, monitoring stack conditions, assisting with space planning and moving, and liaising with CUL Facilities to maintain cleanliness and order in the stacks, and an accurate stack directory.

The incumbent also performs accessioning-as-processing on additions and small collections, including maintenance/updates of bibliographic records and finding aids, as well as to triage, rehouse and inventory new and legacy collections as needed.

The position is also expected to supports and participate in the RBML public service rotation by serving as a backup or on the desk as necessary

Responsibilities & Requirements
● Implement user-centered, holistic cataloging and metadata vision to meet current and
emerging information needs and new models of collection/content building and delivery.
● Establish policies, procedures, and priorities in cataloging and metadata services. Review
and evaluate workflows and assignments, with an eye toward increasing efficiencies.
● Ensure compliance with national and local standards such as MARC, RDA, LCSH, LCCS,
OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards.
● Manage vendor arrangements for the outsourcing of cataloging and metadata work as
needed.
● Work with consortial partners, professional organizations to identify opportunities for
improving discovery and delivery of library content.
● Coordinate and implement bibliographic control policies and practices across the ILS,

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collection Strategy and Management, the Director of Content Management provides leadership, guidance, training and workflow management in a collaborative and diverse working environment.  The Director of Content Management will be expected to participate in faculty activities such as research and scholarship, faculty governance, and professional activities consistent with University standards for promotion and tenure.

Special Collections Catalog Librarian

The Mertz Library of The New York Botanical Garden collects and preserves works of merit in botany, horticulture, and landscape design. The skilled staff of the Mertz Library serve as an invaluable resource by providing high-quality resources and services to meet the needs of the Garden's research staff, botanists, horticulturists, and graduate students as well as scientific, scholarly, and artistic communities worldwide.  The Library is open to the public and supports diverse research, instructional, and outreach programs and develops strategic partnerships that advance research and promote new methods of providing access to an ever-expanding variety of information resources.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Basic Job Functions

Perform original and complex copy cataloging, including descriptive and subject cataloging and authority work, for diverse collections of materials such as books and journals, art and illustration, photographs, maps, born-digital items, and archival collections. Work with other library staff to establish cataloging priorities and projects for special collections materials. 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements workflows, policies, and procedures to catalog efficiently and effectively incoming and backlog special collections materials.
  • Perform original and complex copy cataloging for special collections projects, as well as assist with cataloging the regular new acquisition workflow made up of materials in multiple formats, languages, and time periods.
  • Helps maintain the library’s ERMS with current links, IP addressees, proxy URL, vendor contacts and logins. Initiate SUSHI protocols where available, collect use statistics; maintain the library holdings in the knowledge-base for OCLC Worldcat Discovery service.
  • Create and maintain high quality descriptive metadata for library materials in all formats, including print and digital collections and electronic resources. Keep abreast of current relevant metadata standards and schemas.
  • Perform functions as needed related to the Mertz Library’s participation in the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), a digital library.
  • Serve as project manager for grant-funded special collections cataloging projects, and oversee temporary grant-funded staff if applicable.
  • Stay current with national and international trends in bibliographic control and cataloging standards, especially as they relate to special collections materials.
  • Assist in maintaining the quality and integrity of the library catalog with ongoing maintenance and by resolving problems to ensure bibliographic, holdings, and authority records meet local and national standards.
  • Works on the reference desk assisting patrons to locate materials, as needed.
  • Serves on library and NYBG committees and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Continue the Library’s commitment to NACO by contributing new name authority records to the NAF, and participating in NACO training as necessary.

 Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library science program.
  • Experience in a research library environment, including at least three years of experience in MARC cataloging, preferably with rare materials, manuscripts, art, and/or other non-print collections.
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion and a library ILS such as Innovative Interfaces Sierra.
  • Knowledge of resource description data standards including but not limited to: RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, NACO, DCRM, CONSER, and MARC. Familiarity with other non-MARC standards such as EAD, Dublin Core, and MODS. Understanding of authority control and familiarity with tools used for controlled vocabularies.
  • Awareness of emerging best practices related to BIBFRAME, linked open data, and other non-MARC metadata formats.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages, and comfort and willingness to work on non-English materials using translation tools and resources.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytical, time-management and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent project management skills, and willingness to take a leadership role in cataloging projects and decisions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, willingness to embrace change and create innovative solutions in resource description.
  • Archival collections processing experience, and/or experience with non-MARC metadata creation, and/or art history background a plus.
