P/T - Knowledge & Learning Svcs Asst, Darien Lib (CT)

Part-Time Knowledge & Learning Services Assistant

Darien Library seeks a friendly, energetic self-starter and life-long learner with excellent information-seeking and technology skills. The successful candidate will provide extraordinary customer service, research help, and tech support to Library users. The ideal candidate finds joy in helping others, is perpetually eager to learn new things, and is excited to work with people from all walks of life.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional service to patrons who visit our active Reference Desk and Technology Help Desk.
  • Provide traditional and virtual reference assistance.
  • Oversee activity on the Second Floor and Mezzanine.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the Library's electronic resources including databases and links from the Research page, as well as resources provided by the State Library and other freely available resources.
  • Utilize appropriate reference resources to connect patrons to the information they seek.
  • Assist patrons with print and digital resources, including via Libby, Hoopla, and ComicsPlus.
  • Assist patrons with computer hardware and software, including printers and scanners.
  • Provide Notary Public Services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • MLIS degree or a degree in progress at an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program.
  • Excellent customer service and reference skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
  • Ability to self-start, multitask, and manage time effectively.
  • Clear and direct oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to type quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Multilingual candidates, or those with a functional knowledge of another language, are desirable.

 

Schedule

This is a part-time position with no benefits. The candidate will work an average of 12-20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, plus additional shifts as needed, not to exceed 29 hours per week. This schedule is for planning purposes only. Actual hours may vary and are subject to modification due to staffing needs, programming, or other operational demands of the Library.

 

Salary 

$22-$29.50 an hour, commensurate with experience and CLA minimum requirements.

Research Resources: Library and Archives Assistant

The Library and Archives Assistant will support the Library and Archives team in all aspects of collections development, cataloging, processing, circulation, reference, access, organization, and storage. This is a part-time role, 28 hours weekly. 

Responsibilities 
  • Assist staff with library and archives collection development.
  • Create original and copy cataloging in MARC for library materials, with particular attention to our ongoing work in reparative and equitable metadata.
  • Assist with onsite and remote reference and circulation requests from staff and external researchers, including paging and shelving.
  • Process library and archives materials for secure storge, including items requiring custom preservation housings and encapsulations.
  • Survey, arrange, and describe Whitney archival collections according to best practices.
  • Prepare DACS records for export to the archives’ online public access portal, ArchivesSpace.
  • Prepare select materials for our digital preservation pipeline via ArchiveSpace, Archivematica, and ResourceSpace.
Education Background/Degree requirements 
  •  MLIS or related degree, with experience in art sources and services
Specific knowledge, abilities and/or skills 
  • Experience with library cataloging (MARC, RDA, LCSH, LC classification).
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail.
  • Experience with an ILS.
  • Proficiency in ArchivesSpace, or similar collection management systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong working knowledge of DACS and EAD.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with archival theory and practice, including applying processing strategies and records retention policies.
  • Ability to lift cartons up to 30lbs is helpful.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Library and Archives, the Senior Archivist provides vision and strategy to promote, process, and provide access to the Museum's digital and analog records. The position oversees all functions of the archives and records management program to facilitate collecting, preserving, and providing access to the historical records of the Whitney Museum and related special collections in analog and digital formats. This includes promoting the use of the collections, providing reference support, and coordinating digital initiatives.

Responsibilities 
  • Conduct reference, cataloguing, and processing activities for existing and new archival collections
  • Execute the records retention policy of the institution for analog and digital records 
  • Determine priorities and goals for acquiring processing, digitizing, and preserving analog and digital archival records 
  • Support digital initiatives and the continued development of a digital archival platform and a born-digital records management program 
  • Process digital content 
  • Oversee the delivery of in-depth research 
  • Hire, train, and supervise Archives staff and graduate student interns 
  • Develop and maintain ArchivesSpace 
  • Provide guidance on records management
  • Ensure the confidentiality of museum records 
  • Identify, collect, analyze, and communicate metrics to evaluate the use of archival collections for the purposes of strategic planning

Responsibilities & Requirements:

Reporting to the Director of the Health Sciences Library, the Data Services Analyst Provide will provide research data management training and consultations to School of Medicine faculty, students, and researchers, as well as individuals from other departments; assist with the development and review of Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSPs) in compliance with funder requirements, including policies from the National Institutes of Health and other federal funding agencies; and support researchers with data management, and emerging technologies throughout the research lifecycle; and deliver instruction and workshops on researcher tools and scholarly infrastructure such as ORCID and SciENcv, as well as emerging tools incorporating AI to support literature discovery and clinical inquiry, research workflows, and grant preparation. Provide guidance on responsible and effective use of AI-enabled research tools, including issues related to research integrity, data privacy, and reproducibility; advise on data organization, documentation, metadata standards, repository selection, and data sharing practices; develop guides and instructional materials to support research workflows; collaborate with research computing, biomedical informatics, library digital services and other institutional partners to support evolving research technologies and services; and provide research consultations, literature searching support, and instruction as needed. While research data management is an important component of the role, the position extends beyond data management to provide comprehensive support for researchers throughout the research lifecycle.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide research consultations and expert literature searching support.

  • Participates in library, campus, national, and international professional committees.

  • Contributes to the field through research, presentations, and scholarship.

  • Identify opportunities to develop and implement new services that advance the mission of the libraries.
