CHAPPAQUA LIBRARY

Public Service Librarian (Part-time)


The Chappaqua Library is seeking a public service librarian to join our team and provide an exceptional user experience to all. This person will deliver quality reference, reader’s advisory services, and teach users how to access library resources and technology (in-person and online). Special duties will be assigned and may include outreach, programming, and collection development projects. The ideal candidate has strong technology skills and shows enthusiasm for helping others and the Library engage and connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. This position is supervised by the Head of Adult Services.


The Library is dedicated to the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse staff who support the vision of the Library. We strongly encourage individuals from all backgrounds to explore employment opportunities with us.


RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide reference, reader’s advisory, and information literacy services.

  • Provide instruction on the use of library resources, including tech-help and online e-resources.

  • Perform collection development, programming, and/or other special assignments.

  • Promote library services through community outreach, as well as print and electronic methods (flyers, social media, etc.).

  • Create and maintain accurate library statistics, reports and documents.

  • Maintain effective communication with co-workers and supervisors, in-person and digitally. 

  • Keep up to date with professional development.


SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Cultural competence skills.

  • Strong technology skills, experience with Evergreen ILS a plus.

  • Proficient with Windows OS, digital databases, and Google Docs.

  • Approach challenges and change with a positive, problem solving, and learning attitude.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program. 

  • NYS Public Librarian Certificate.


SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION:

This is a part-time position, to be scheduled up to a maximum of 17 hours a week. Must be able to work every other weekend on a rotating basis and evenings as needed. Salary is $32.21 per hour. Benefits include New York State Retirement system eligibility and sick leave.

Asst Librarian for Tech'l Svcs, Dominican Coll (NY)

 

SEARCH EXTENDED -- ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN for Technical Services

 

Dominican College, located in Rockland County, 20 miles north of New York City, seeks an enthusiastic candidate with a strong orientation toward user-centered service to fill the role of Assistant Librarian for Technical Services.

 

Reporting to the College's Head Librarian, the Assistant Librarian manages electronic resources and the integrated library system, catalogs library materials in all formats, coordinates all interlibrary loan requests and assists with reference questions.  Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

 

  • Manages access to electronic resources
  • Facilitates maintenance, development and technical support for Library software and resources through vendor collaboration
  • Administers basic configuration of SirsiDynix Sirsi integrated library system (ILS)
  • Catalogs and processes library materials in all formats
  • Manages and delivers interlibrary loan services (ILL)
  • Delivers reference service
  • Evaluates collections and materials
  • Assists with outreach
  • Trains and supervises library work study students
  • Provides library instruction, as needed
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

 

Hours:

During the Academic Semesters: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm; hours may vary during exam periods.

 

Requirements: The successful candidate will have an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent graduate LIS degree. This individual should have excellent communication, interpersonal and technology skills. Must demonstrate a learner-centered approach to assisting library users. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, OCLC, MARC, RDA for cataloging. Familiarity with ILLiad and DOCLINE. Experience managing an integrated library system and Discovery layer like Ebsco’s EDS. A commitment to developing and maintaining familiarity with current and emerging trends in technical services is essential. Two years of experience, preferably in an academic library and experience in technical services or electronic resource services preferred.

The Nanuet Public Library seeks substitute Librarians to join the Adult and Children's

Finkelstein Memorial Library in Spring Valley, NY has an opening for an Assistant Director. This position involves responsibility under the general direction of the Library Director for assigned phases of library administration and services. Acts for the Library Director in her absence. Supervision will be exercised over the work and personnel of several library departments. Does related work as required.

Duties will include: Handles personnel problems and staff disputes; Plans and recommends new types of services; Recommends policy to the Library Director; Oversees aspects of the library’s strategic plan of service including spearheading Equity, Diversity and Inclusion program; Consults with department heads on administrative and technical library problems; When so assigned, makes decisions concerning the organization and allocation of work to department heads; Makes studies of operating procedures and makes recommendations to the director; Assists in preparing preliminary budget estimates; Participates in staff selection and in the development of the personnel program; Keeps informed of new library trends and recommends trainings/professional developments to bring the staff up to date; Coordinates and supervises collection development; works with the grant committee and researches and completes grant applications; Attends professional meetings; May supervise selection of library materials; May review work performed by staff; May conduct staff meetings; May represent the library at community and group meetings; special projects as assigned by the director.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of library techniques; comprehensive knowledge of library administrative practices; ability to carry out library policies; ability to comprehend and meet users’ needs quickly and accurately; ability to train and supervise the library staff; ability to plan and coordinate the work of others; ability to exercise leadership and motivate others; ability to evaluate situations, comfortable in social situations, able to participate effectively in the cultural and intellectual activities of the community; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; initiative in making constructive suggestions for improvements in services and collections; demonstrate good social graces, tact, courtesy and good judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Professional certification as a Public Librarian by the New York State Department of Education and six (6) years of professional library experience in a library of recognized standing, three (3) years of which must have been in a public library. Experience must have been attained after either: receipt of the certification or receipt of a Master's degree from a library school recognized by the New York State Department of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated history of successful grant applications, experience working in a civil service environment, experience working in a union environment.

PROMOTION: Three (3) years of permanent competitive class status as a Librarian III.
