The Robert W. Van Houten Library, NJIT's university library, houses a core collection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), business, humanities, and social sciences resources, and has an Information Commons computer lab with more than 100+ computer workstations and collaborative study spaces throughout the building. The Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture, Art and Design Library, a branch of the university library, maintains a core collection of architecture, art, and design resources. The Library has a staff of 24, who are committed to developing innovations in access and research services, information and digital literacies, and digital initiatives. The Library has an annual operating budget of $4.5 million and spends over 94% of the materials budget to acquire scholarly electronic resources for anytime, anywhere access. The collection comprises over 560,000+ volumes with 114 full-text databases, over 84,000+ electronic journals, 335,000+ ebooks, and 225,000+ physical holdings. The Library uses Ex Libris Alma and Primo Discovery, OCLC, ILLiad, RapidILL, and Digital Commons. The NJIT Library team works to fulfill the mission and vision of NJIT and is committed to supporting the Institute's new Strategic Plan.

Position Summary:
Robert W. Van Houten Library at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a collaborative, detailed-oriented, and tech-savvy Scholarly Communication Librarian to support and contribute to the university’s creative activities, innovative teaching, and robust research ecosystem. This position reports to the University Librarian and has a leading role in the workflows that establish and maintain the library’s scholarly communication lifecycle, digital humanities, open access, and open education. The position supports new models for research and scholarship by providing and managing digital tools and applications for content creation, delivery, discovery, and analysis. The position also educates faculty and students in copyright, creative commons licenses, and intellectual property to safeguard the library’s role in the scholarly communication lifecycle.
Essential Functions:
Scholarly Communication (65%):
- Develop, lead, manage, and assess the scholarly communication program, including implementing the strategic plan’s goals and objectives related to this position.
- Work closely with relevant library teams, faculty departments, and campus partners, develop and implement university open access policies and new publishing models that enable broader sharing and dissemination of the university’s scholarship.
- Educate members of the university community about their rights as creators and users of scholarship, the role of copyright in teaching, research, and publishing, and broader issues in scholarly communication.
- Seek opportunities to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, evaluate current and emerging digital tools and methodologies to support digital humanities scholars.
- Advocate for and promote the deposit of university-produced scholarship aligned with the NJIT’s institutional repository, Digital Commons.
- Consult with faculty to assist them in discovering, adopting, and adapting OER and promote awareness, understanding, and engagement with open pedagogical practices.
Assessment (25%):
- Coordinate work of library colleagues engaged in improving user experience while helping to create a culture that leverages data to make service improvements.
- Design and lead programs to conduct both ongoing and targeted assessment of library services to improve those services continually.
- Participate in analysis and documentation of quantitative and qualitative assessment data to help the library leadership team make informed, evidence-based, data-driven decisions about services and priorities.
Research and Instruction (10%):
- Provide research and reference assistance, both virtual and in-person. Connect library patrons with appropriate information resources individually and in groups. Provide quick answers via chat and perform complex literature searches.
- Participate in a team-based approach to develop instructional materials, share best practices and pedagogical resources, and conduct assessments of instructional initiatives.
- Develop and maintain guides and tutorials as assigned.
Additional Functions:
- Service Development: act as the primary spokesperson at the campus, system-wide,
state, national, and international levels for issues and policies relating to scholarly communication, publishing trends, intellectual property rights, and the advancement of scholarly communication. Participate in University and Library committees. - Professional Development: provides leadership for and contributes to projects as assigned, such as reviews for accreditations and new programs. Pursues personal, professional development and contributes to the profession through scholarship and service to library organizations.
- Work Schedule: a typical work week may include evening hours as assigned. The schedule may be adjusted according to the instruction, learning, and research needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree in relevant discipline.
- Three (3) years of recent, professional work experience with publishing or research, including research workflows and lifecycles.
- Familiarity with scholarly communication principles, practices and trends, open access, open education, etc.
- Knowledge of copyright law related to the scholarly communication process, data management, data visualization, and other emerging areas of research.
- Ability to provide instruction in various settings and formats with a broad knowledge and understanding of instruction, pedagogy, and principles related to information and digital literacies development.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel and other quantitative analysis tools for library data analytics for decision-making.
- Proven ability to build partnerships and relationships to enhance research, learning, education, and student success.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to take initiatives, manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- At the university’s discretion, the formal education and experience prerequisites may be accepted if the candidate can demonstrate an equivalent combination of education and experience to the satisfaction of the university, specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline taught at NJIT or an advanced degree related to instructional design, assessment, and user experience.
- Experience employing student learning assessment and growing an instruction initiative/program in an academic or research library.
- Experience working in an academic or research library.
- Project management and supervisor experience.
