The
Robert W. Van Houten Library, NJIT's university library, houses a core
collection of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM),
business, humanities, and social sciences resources, and has an
Information Commons computer lab with more than 100+ computer
workstations and collaborative study spaces throughout the building. The
Barbara and Leonard Littman Architecture, Art and Design Library, a
branch of the university library, maintains a core collection of
architecture, art, and design resources. The Library has a staff of 24,
who are committed to developing innovations in access and research
services, information and digital literacies, and digital initiatives.
The Library has an annual operating budget of $4.5 million and spends
over 94% of the materials budget to acquire scholarly electronic
resources for anytime, anywhere access. The collection comprises over
560,000+ volumes with 114 full-text databases, over 84,000+ electronic
journals, 335,000+ ebooks, and 225,000+ physical holdings. The Library
uses Ex Libris Alma and Primo Discovery, OCLC, ILLiad, RapidILL, and
Digital Commons. The NJIT Library team works to fulfill the mission and
vision of NJIT and is committed to supporting the Institute's new
Strategic Plan.

Position Summary:
The Robert W. Van Houten Library at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks an experienced, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for a full-time, non-tenure-track position of Research and Instruction Librarian for the engineering and science disciplines. The Librarian reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Engagement and assists, advises, and instructs users with accessing and using information in all formats, including direct and indirect service onsite and virtual.
The Librarian serves as liaison to designated STEM departments and programs and administrative units to support resource discovery and access, research and instruction, and assessment; teaches course-integrated research instruction, information literacy sessions, and ad-hoc workshops in designated disciplines; provides reference services and collection development. The successful incumbent will demonstrate a capacity to provide independence and collaborative customer service.
A typical work week includes at least one evening (until 9:00 pm) per week and three (3) weekends per fall and spring semesters. The schedule may be adjusted according to the instruction and education needs.
Essential Functions:
Liaison and Engagement:
- Serves as liaison to students, faculty, and staff for education, instruction, research, and collection services for assigned disciplines.
- Performs cited reference searches for promotion and tenure.
- Provides outreach, engagement, and education services related to open access, open education, copyright, data management and digital scholarship for assigned disciplines.
- Cultivates relationships through campus engagement and actively establishes productive relationships with faculty, staff, and students to integrate the library resources in curricula and research projects.
- Plans and coordinates workshops and events to educate faculty and staff on depositing scholarly works in the institutional repository.
Research and Instruction:
- Collaborates with faculty to design outcome-based information literacy sessions and assesses learning outcomes per standards.
- Promotes, prepares, delivers, and assesses course-integrated instruction.
- Participates in a team-based approach to develop instructional materials, shares best practices and pedagogical resources, and conducts assessments of instructional sessions.
- Connects library patrons with appropriate information resources, provides quick answers and performs more complex literature searches as needed.
- Develops and maintains user guides, videos and tutorials.
Additional Functions:
- Service Development: Serves as the primary public interface between patrons and library services. Collaborates with library colleagues to evaluate current services. Takes initiative to identify, assess, plan, and promote user services. Recommends, designs and implements new services.
- Resource Development: Monitors relevant information sources assigned disciplines. Continuously evaluate, select, recommend, and purchase information resources to address needs.
- University Service & Professional Development: Provides leadership for and contributes to projects as assigned, such as accreditation reviews, promotion & tenure support. Participates in University and Library committees. Pursues professional development and contributes to the profession through scholarship and service to library organizations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent and a bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline.
- Three (3) years of professional experience with substantial reference and library instruction in an academic or similar library, including considerable knowledge of print and electronic information resources.
- Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and relationships to enhance research, learning, education, and student success.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer skills and library social media applications; experience with information sources, tools, and software for the creation of user guides, online and video tutorials, citation management and learning management systems, including facility with spreadsheets.
- Demonstrated ability to work creatively and collaboratively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, inclusion and respect.
- The formal education and experience prerequisites may be waived at the university’s discretion if the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
