Web & Data Svcs Librarian, Rockefeller U (NY)

The mission of Markus Library is to support and enhance the University's research programs and to promote the reputation and influence of the University. Utilizing its own extensive collections in the life sciences that support the research interests of the University, and a wide array of information resources licensed beyond the University, the Library is able to provide the faculty, staff and students scientific information support needed to advance their research goals. Using technology, a variety of collaborative relationships, and networking and outreach activities, the library supports and advances scholarly communication and the advancement of knowledge.
 
Detailed Description

The Web and Data Services Librarian will be responsible for the daily operation of various web and IT infrastructure services in the Rita and Frits Markus Library. Will be responsible for the maintenance, upgrades and development of the Alma/Primo system, the Library webpage and blog, RU publications database, and the Public Mac's and PC's in the main reading room. Working with the University Librarian, The Web and Data Services Librarian will also be responsible, along with the University Librarian, for the development, implementation, outreach and support of Data Management activities at Rockefeller University. Will work with the Assistant University Librarian and University Librarian to ensure that the appropriate services are developed, implemented, and improved upon and that the Library's web and IT infrastructure remains functional and relevant. Will be involved in the development of a robust Data Management service that provides training, support and assistance throughout the research data life cycle and includes developing, in conjunction with the University Librarian and IT, a data repository, data catalog, metadata schema and ontology for Rockefeller University. Other responsibilities include the development and implementation of trainings, workshops and one on one sessions for data management concepts and tools such as DMPTool, supporting faculty and students in both finding datasets and making datasets findable, and staying current with changes in the data management landscape from the perspective of funders and publishers.
 
Job Requirements

MLS, MLIS, or Ph.D. required. Must have knowledge of Alma/Primo software or other major library OPAC and OCLC Connexion and Label software, current data management standards and best practices, XML-based standards such as Dublin Core, and metadata standards related to the description, access, and preservation of numeric data, such as the Data Documentation initiative (DDI) specification. Must have familiarity with data repository systems and scripting and programming languages such as PHP, Perl, Python, and R. Experience with website design and maintenance and knowledge of copyright and licensing issues related to data deposit and sharing required. Must have excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills. Must be able to work quickly, accurately, and independently. Effective project management skills and attention to detail required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

Job Description:

The Systems and Learning Technologies Librarian will work collaboratively with others to identify, develop, deploy, and manage new and existing technologies (hardware, software, virtual and cloud-based) to support library services, teaching and learning, research and creative endeavors.  This is inclusive of electronic resources, Ex Libris Alma/Primo, Ship library web site, and applications to deliver reference and instructional services.  This position will require innovation, creativity and a willingness to problem solve.
  • Administer and maintain the integrated library management system (Alma) and discovery tool (Primo) and electronic resources access. Troubleshoot issues that may arise with these tools
  • Provide technical expertise, day-to-day administration, and broad support for traditional and emerging library hardware and software
  • Serve as administrator for subscribed Springshare products
  • Work collaboratively with others, within the library and across campus, on systems-related, technology-related, and digitally-based services and projects.
  • Provides library systems support to library colleagues. Understands and responds to library systems-related needs across library units.
  • Engage faculty and students to explore new technologies around which the Library may build research and learning support services
  • Manage the evolving slate of library technology service operations
  • Participate in the collaborative libraries-wide efforts to extend technology learning support to students and faculty across the curriculum through resource development, training and communication
  • Work closely with the Center for Teaching Excellence on Blackboard administration
  • Responsible for all facets and complexities of the Electronic Resources life-cycle, from acquisition to access, administration, support and evaluation.; advocates for fair terms & pricing, open access, new models of shared access, and content preservation.
  • Work closely with the Content Management Librarian to identify new e-resources, and evaluate & assess collections for content, discoverability and ease of access.
  • Communicate changes in content & platforms to library faculty and staff in a timely and effective manner
  • Generate and maintain customized reports for library systems and learning technologies
  • Participate in library instruction, including creation of research guides, in collaboration with fellow librarians
  • Trains staff and student workers as necessary
  • Provides general and specialized reference service in person and virtually
  • Serves as a subject liaison for developing resources and collections
  • Teaches general library research classes to undergraduate and graduate students and develops customized supplementary materials/tools as needed for instruction sessions
  • Participates in professional service and research activities in support of promotion and tenure requirements
  • Serves on college and library committees, participates in local, regional, and national associations, and engages in scholarly activity required for promotion and tenure

Requirements:

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited school or an ALA approved foreign equivalent
  • High degree of current awareness in computers and related technologies in emerging use at institutions of higher education
  • Strong understanding of electronic resource management and library systems
  • Knowledge of Blackboard/learning management systems
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and report data
  • Demonstrated collaboration and teamwork skills

A part-time (4-days-a-week) temporary position for a Reference and Research Archivist is available to begin September 2019. The incumbent will work as a member of a cross-institutional team on the development of a strategic plan for the Museum’s renowned collection of American art that is being supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.  The position is for 2 years, eligible for health insurance and paid time off.

Reporting directly to the Benjamin and Irma Weiss Director of Research Resources, the Reference and Research Archivist will provide access and reference to permanent collections data, archival documentation, visual resources, and other primary and secondary resources relating to the Whitney’s permanent collection and exhibitions. Working closely with Research Resources, Curatorial, and Registration staff, the role of this position will be to provide research reference, to analyze and synthesize information across the Whitney’s permanent collection, archive, and library databases (TMS, ArchiveSpace, and Koha) and to facilitate the discovery of collections content, data, and information. 

Responsibilities
Carrying out collections information reference, retrieval, and research; generating reports on completed research; and developing metrics, guides, and other data-generating and reporting tools, processing archival material to facilitate access, and to schedule and arrange appointments for access to archival records and permanent collection documentation as well as processing of archival material to enable access.

Job Requirements
2-3 years of experience working in an archival setting relating to the arts or a museum.  Knowledge of archival reference and research, archival processing and description, and modern and contemporary art history, as well as an understanding of library, archives, and museum content and metadata standards. An MLIS in Library or Information Sciences or a related degree with equivalent experience is required

The Content Management Librarian will lead technical services operations and maintain a collection development strategy to proactively develop a specialized print and electronic collection that supports the research, teaching, and learning needs of our students, faculty, and staff. The Content Management Librarian will also ensure that the library materials budget is efficiently allocated and aligned with established needs, assess the Library's current collections for ongoing relevance and/or historical value and continually assess the effectiveness of the collection via circulation and usage statistics.

F/T - Archive Fellow, Studio Museum in Harlem (NY)

Archive Fellow

The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society. The Studio Museum has earned a reputation as a leader in the contemporary arts arena and is internationally known for its catalytic role in promoting the work of artists of African descent.

Reporting to the Studio Museum's Registrar and working in close collaboration with the Lead Consulting Archivist and Museum Archivist, the Archive Fellow will support the processing of The Studio Museum in Harlem's estimated 850 cubic feet of institutional records and assist in the creation of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid. The Archive Fellow will work in consultation with the Museum Archivist to follow processing standards and plans, create standardized descriptions, and ensure consistency and quality for the overall project.

This is a full-time, grant-funded position funded through June 30, 2020.

Responsibilities:
  • In close conjunction with the Museum Archivist, coordinate the organization of a large, complex, multi-format manuscript collection
  • Assist in inputting, assigning, tracking, and systematizing archive material metadata, following archival metadata standards
  • Assist in establishing a work-flow for archive processing
  • Prepare and distribute monthly reports to track progress
  • Collaborate with Registrar (and relevant Studio Museum departments) to support the archive’s emerging role in all database and digital asset management systems
  • Coordinate digitization, as needed
  • Support reference requests from Studio Museum staff and external institutions
  • Aid in the supervision of Archive Intern(s)
Qualifications:
  • Recent graduate or current student pursuing an MLS or MLIS, preferably with an Archives Certification
  • Familiarity with different DAMS and/or similar type Digital Asset Management Software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with collections of contemporary art
  • A general understanding and knowledge of the principles of archival appraisal, survey, arrangement, description and preservation, with particular familiarity with MPLP methodology
  • Direct experience with processing collections and establishing an EAD finding aid
  • Consistent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Expertise in the use of a broad range of information systems, services and databases relevant to archives and special collections
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with digitization projects
  • Team orientated individual, with a focus on flexibility, versatility, and an ability to work collaboratively
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, climb a ladder, stoop and reach in a variety of physical locations

JOB TITLE: Project Archivist (6 months, Full-Time Position)

The New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

JOB SUMMARY:
The New-York Historical Society Library seeks an experienced archivist for a 6 month project to enhance bibliographic and intellectual control over under-described portions of its archival holdings. Under the supervision of the curator of manuscripts, with input from the head of archival processing, the Project Archivist will carry out basic description to ensure a minimum level of intellectual control over unprocessed archival holdings. Collections represented comprise a broad chronological range, though mainly covering the 19th and 20th century holdings on diverse aspects of New York and American history.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Produce baseline description, creating box lists and brief summaries for unprocessed and under-described archival collections, as identified by the manuscripts curator
  • Use the library’s collection management system, ArchivesSpace, to document resources with varying levels of description
  • Carry out physical rehousing and rearrangement of select collections
  • Maintain a pace of work that accomplishes the project’s processing and descriptive goals within the set timeframe.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent degree, with concentration in archival studies

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • A minimum of two years’ experience as a professional archivist arranging and describing archival materials
  • A track record of success in the timely completion of projects
  • Ability to think critically and recommend solutions to complex problems
  • Knowledge of and experience with archival standards and best practices, such as DACS and Library of Congress subject headings
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working with ArchivesSpace preferred
  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative workplace team structure

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

The position requires the ability to lift and carry for short distances storage boxes weighing up to 40 lbs.
