Columbia University Libraries seeks a Social Sciences and Policy Librarian to join the Science, Engineering, and Social Science Libraries (SESSL). The Social Sciences and Policy Librarian engages and collaborates with a diverse body of faculty and students across the School of International and Public Affairs and several social science departments and centers, including sociology, political science, cultural anthropology, and the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy. An emphasis on current affairs, policy, and data support is part of this role, in order to best serve the constituents of these schools and departments. This position also supports the new Climate School for environmental and climate policy.
The Librarian will support research and learning through outreach to faculty and students, research support services, and significant collection development and maintenance for the social sciences. As part of the Science, Engineering, and Social Sciences team, the Librarian is responsible for research consultations, instructional services, and providing front-line research support in-person and virtually.

This role is being hired for at the same time as two other positions in the Science, Engineering, and Social Science Libraries. These positions work with students, faculty, staff, and alumni in their distinct areas of responsibility, while at the same time collaborating as part of the SESSL Research Support & Outreach team and other Libraries units to build strong instructional programs, research assistance, and collections that are grounded in DEI and anti-racism.
Responsibilities
Work with colleagues to develop collections in the applicable social sciences, including monitoring the assigned budgets, needs for new materials, and cancellations.
Design and teach orientations, course-integrated instruction, and general-topic workshops to support the research and learning needs of constituents.
Provide research support services for library users in-person and virtually, including consultations, email reference, chat, and drop-in help.
Build relationships with faculty, staff, and students in the School of International and Public Affairs and designated social sciences through outreach and events.
Provide support for research involving current affairs, policy, and data for library users affiliated with the School of International and Public Affairs and the social sciences.
Participate in local and national organizations, and library system-wide committees.

Qualifications
Minimum Degree Required:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) or other advanced degree in a related field
Minimum Qualifications:
Proven commitment to values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience or interest in supporting student research needs
Preferred Qualifications:
Academic background in a social sciences discipline
Demonstrated ability to provide high quality services to users
Experience providing library instruction
Demonstrated experience with research databases
Minimum Salary: $73,000
