F/T - Local History Librarian, Field Library (NY)

Job Title: Local History Librarian


Summary: Under the direction of the Head of Adult Services, the Local History Librarian participates in the acquisition, organization, maintenance and preservation of the Library’s Local History Collection; develops and maintains assigned library collections; provides one-on-one and group training for library patrons, staff and volunteers on the use of local history resources; performs professional work in reference, collection development, readers’ advisory and supervises the work of Local History volunteers.


Essential Job Functions:


• Participates in the development and maintenance of the Library’s local history collections.
• Makes local history collections accessible to researchers through the development and maintenance of catalogs and finding aids and the digitization of the collection.
• Assists organizations, groups and individuals with access to the local history collections.
• Pursues grant funding for the processing, conservation, and imaging of the local history collection.
• Researches and provides answers to reference questions, including those of a difficult or involved nature in person, by phone or electronically.
• Participates in the selection of library materials within assigned collection development areas; evaluates materials and makes decisions about selection, replacement and withdrawal of print and non-print materials.
• Instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog, websites, reference sources and databases and various software programs. Assists patrons in resolving technology based questions.
• Plans and presents educational programs and workshops focusing on the local history collections.
• Maintains statistical information on the use of local history resources.
• Provides input and development ideas regarding the content of the library website.
• Establishes good relationships with local historical societies and other genealogical groups.
• Keeps informed of professional and technological development through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses, and reading professional materials.
• Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of professional library principles, public reference service expertise and an understanding of public library operations.
• Knowledge of library technology, systems, products and delivery.
• Ability to work well under pressure, prioritize projects and detail/deadline oriented.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with fellow employees, supervisors and the general public.
• Excellent writing and computer skills including social media.
• Library automation system experience preferred.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
• Knowledge and experience using an automated library system and databases.
• Valid New York State Public Librarian Certification.
• Spanish language skills desired.

This is a full-time exempt position. Hiring range $50,000 - $55,000 depending on qualifications. Generous benefits package.
